tank size?

A 25 gallon tank, eh?
What an awkward size... according to seahorse.org, erectus and most medium size species need a 29 gallon tank. 25 seems a little small, but it's too big for dwarfs. A 29 gallon, (or in the case of dwarfs, a 5 gallon) might suit you better.

Considering that you won't fill the tank to the very top then it will hold less than 25g.
It will mean keeping just one pair of standard size seahorses like H. reidi or H. erectus, and you will have to be more diligent with tank husbandry but if you are careful you can do it.

im getting the tank free so i would like to use it. im planning on doing around a 10 gallon sump. im fine with only having a pair in the tank.

I'd go for barbouri or fuscus if you can, they stay smaller. Still one pair, but a bit less bioload. You could get a maintence fish in there too, like a two spot goby or a yellow watchmen. Perhaps a pair of peppermint shrimp. Would be fun.
