Tank stand mod.

Hello every one I have a 120g oceanic brick.
What I was wanting to do is mod the stand where I can slide the sump out of the side.
What would you all think about cutting a door in the side of the tank stand? or has any one done this before.
Thanks

I would be wary of doing that myself. The sides play a very important part in the support structure and carries some good weight.

Ya I talked to a man at Oceanic today and he said they have never done any thing like that but they are making new tanks that have side doors but the stands have been heavily reinforced he also said the sides dont really hold up much wight if any but it does give it side to side and front to back support.
So I guess i'm stuck with the crummy Sump I got when I set the tank up. Oh well live and learn..

Reinforce and Cut. Never look back! My buddy did it to a 90 gallon wobbly stand and it was fine... but he didnt cut out a hole and leave part he just took the whole side off... lol

Is there a frame to the stand? If so the skin doesnt do much but adds rigidity as the guy told you.

If it were me I would do it after bracing the stand. If it is a structural peice and there is no frame then I wouldnt do it.

what would be the best way to brace the stand?

Go look at Deep Sea Aquatics' stands. They've been making them with side doors since they started. Sounds like Oceanic/Aqueon is off to "borrow" another idea.

Without seeing It I don't know. I would try to tie the front and back together along with some 90 degree bookshelf braces from HD. If you snap some pics it might be clearer as to what your intentions are.

i'd be really careful about this, its got to be braced well enough for you to be able to make mistakes too. and the risk here is a hlarious eulogy

Well Oceanic really isnt Oceanic any more. They were bought out buy some one and all the old people from Oceanic stayed and started Deep sea.

Well I wouldn't say hilarious more like running around my whole block screaming and crying like spongeBob.
But i'm starting to think I can do this, but the fear of watching a tsunami sweep through my living room is keep the saws at bay right now.
I did some looking around and I cant find any proof of any one trying this...

stand

stand

Thats all just mark and cut No reinforcing thats it.. Wow I thought there would be more to it then that. Oh well I guess i'll give it a try wish me luck :)

Besides making sure you reinforce properly you will void your warranty for your tank. That’s assuming you have an Oceanic tank.

post pics when you do!!!, ive gotta 125 and have been thinkin about this as well there is no good way to get a good size tank underneath there because of the center brace . this is the only option i can think of. you got more cajones than me!!!
