Tank Stocking List

I want to put together a list of the stock I would like to have in my new 180 gallon and will update this as I go from what I have and what I would like to see in the future.

First I am wondering about Tangs. They would probably be the "showpiece" of the tank and I would like to have a few in there is the ones I like are compatible. I realize eventually after I select different fish that they may not be compatible with others so it will be modified over time.

Tangs I'm interested in by family:
(Paracanthurus)
Yellow Belly Regal Blue

(Zebrasoma)
Sailfin

(Naso)
Blonde Naso

(Acanthurus) (Several here, have to choose what's most compatible with others)
Powder Blue
White Cheek
Orange Shoulder
Powder Brown

(Ctenochaetus)
Orange Stripe Bristletooth

So the tangs, I'd like to eventually have at least one from each family and I'd have to choose one from the Acanthurus. I'm really wanting either a blue or brown powder. Are the ones I listed compatible with each other or are there ones that I should avoid or just won't get along with other tangs/other fish? Is it possible to have five tangs, regardless of family, in the same tank or should I cut it down a couple?

i would go with the Paracanthurus, Zebrasoma, Orange Shoulder and the Ctenochaetus (in regards to your fish list). Scratch the rest. Naso simply can get too large and the powder blue and brown can become ich magnets and be absolute bullies. i personally dont have any comments about the white cheek maybe someone else can chime in but i thought they were pretty close to powder browns so i would also stay away from that. With regards to the Zebrasoma the "dejardini" would be the sailfin to get, great markings and much more spectacular then the regular Sailfin.

I personally would skip the Powder Blue. I named all of my powders Richard; as they are dicks to every other tang in the tank. I removed my powder blue and sold him on Craig's list. I have had three over the years, and they are all dicks. They chase similar tangs even in my 360 gallon. I heard the Powder Brown is of similar temperament.

My 12" blond Naso, 7" Sailfin, 7" Hippo, 5" Purple, 4" Achilles and a 4" Kole tang all get along great. The Blond Naso does rule the tank though. Five tangs in a 180 does seem like much, especially with the Naso. Mine is 12" with streamers in only 2 years from 4"

Good luck!

That really really sucks to hear about the powders as they were probably my favorite fish and I certainly wanted one or the other but if they're that bad, I'll skip them. I absolutely have to have a Naso though. A buddy of mine has one and I love it but I want the blonde version. I did have a Kole tang in my old 75 and it was a nice fish to have although a little bossy, I want something different in this tank so that's why I went with the Orange Stripe Bristletooth. So thanks to you guys' help, I'll modify my list. I also picked out several others and will update it.

Apparently I can't edit my original post. That sucks. Anyways...

Tangs:
Yellow Belly Regal Blue
Sailfin
Blonde Naso
Orange Shoulder
Orange Stripe Bristletooth
(I may cut this down to four, if so, it'll be either the Orange Stripe Bristletooth or the Yellow Belly Regal Blue)

Angelfish
---------
Lamarck's (9") (Not sure I want this yet but one of few reef safe angels)

Anthias (Group)
-------
Lyretail (5") (One male and two females possibly)

Blennies (One of the three)
--------
Midas (6")
One Spot (4")
Algae/Sailfin (5")

Butterfly
---------
Copperband (8") (Well established tank/I know there will be some that will say not to get this)

Cardinal
--------
Spotted (3 1/2") (Small school maybe 3-5?)

Clown (Leaning towards black/white)
-----
Black and White (3")
Occelaris (3 1/2")
Percula (3")

Goby (Definitely want a goby/shrimp combo)
----
Bluespotted Watchman (5 1/2")
Orange Spotted (3")
Orange Stripe Prawn (4 1/2")
Wheeler's Shrimp (3")

Rabbitfish (Leaning towards Yellow Blotch)
----------
Yellow Blotch (1' 4")
Gold Spotted (1' 4")
Magnificent (9")

Just a heads up: if your 180 is a 6 foot long tank, the adult Naso will be fully 1/4 the length of the tank once fully grown. That won't give it much swimming room at all. Close to the same with the Sailfin.
