Tank temp 102 :(

:( I was doing a 3 day lights out thing as per the cayno sticky... i see now it said put newspaper on the sides of the tank, and not cover the tank with blankets.... I came home today and my tank was 102 degrees.... strangly the heater was on... not sure if the heater freaked out and went crazy high... but the dial was on the same setting it always has been... i turned the dial down and it turned off.. i have everything icy cold i could possibly fit in freezer bags floating in the tank right now, and im spraying the sides of the tank with water (evap) trying to cool it... but all my snails (a huge population of limpits and some turbo snails) are upside down on the bottom... appear either dead or very close.... 2 clown fish dead (wilson and chuck [like from cast away]).... wont be able to tell on my corals until i get the temp down, my toadstool doesnt look happy, looks like he needs some viagara:worried:..... tragic. My red slime was out of control and I have been under motivated with the tank for the last 4-5 months..... but recently i really gave it a ton of work....did a massive water change, ordered new bulbs, and a good refug light, changed filter media and stuff, been cleaning skimmer every day....

I guess why im writing this is firstly any hope for any of the poor creatures in there? and secondly to let people know i dont know if it was the blanket covering or the heater malfunctioning, but be careful with the lights out thing.... use newspaper on the sides like the sticky says. Also i feel like really really terrible.... i loved these little guys and im devistated. Please be kind unless you feel you must berate me, i didnt mean to do this. :*(

Sounds like it was your heater. A blanket will trap some heat but not 102 degrees worth.
Think of people who use a canvas up top, they dont have this problem. I would invest in a good heater. in fact i may up the quality on mine just in case.

When I did a lights out for 3 days about 6 months ago I used a blanket with zero issues. I'm confident your heater is the culprit. Get a new one and preferably 2. Each one rated at half the tank capacity. This way they work together to maintain temp, but if one fails and sticks in the on position, it's not powerful enough by itself to fry the tank.

I guess i would feel a little better if it ended up being the heater... just seems like a coincidence that it malfunctioned the same time i decided to do a lights out, its possible i may have bumped it or something when i was putting the blankets over the tank.... i had to move the wire bundle to get the blanket under it... so i know i def moved it a little....

Thank you for the suggestion of getting two half powered heaters.... I will def do that. Does anyone have thoughts on this brand? (ViaAqua)

also do any of you know if there is any hope for any of my corals? zoas, palys, toadstools, lots of mushys, gorgonian, star polyps?

Were you on vacation when this happened? Sleeping? There's always going to be a "horror" show like this, but some of them can be avoided. (attention) "I have no life... I'm always around the water..." JME.

FWIW, I use a 300 watt heater in my 20 gallon nano. No problem. (as of yet/trust/~4 yrs)

That is way over kill for that tank. It could get you into a dangerous temp zone in no time.

Not really... I'm not sure if you read that right, but I'm always there... (magnetic) The temp will never get out of control...

If it does, it does... Driving a car to work can heat you up sometimes... (wreck) No guaranty actually... GL.

Ok its confirmed.... it was the heater... i took the heater out of the water to find that the bottom of it was so hot it was actually melting the plastic.... i put a candle next to it and the wax started to melt. the glass isnt cracked anywhere.... i am not sure what happened. :( its awful. once it cools enough to scrape the coralline algae off of it ill let you guys know what brand it was. ive had it for id say 3 years now.

i dont know if i said this, but i fed my fishies late last night, and i feed them by hand, the water was normal, and they were alive and well... i didnt check them this morning before i went to work but when i came home at 530 tank was 102.... so its not like i neglect them. I always sit and watch the tank a bit and ya know make sure everything is ok before I go to work normally... but with the blanket on it I just didnt, but who knows it could have happened this morning. Idk.

That sucks...

Your in the MINORITY now. Things like this don't happen that often. Don't let it discourage you...

I've had good luck with two 75 watt eheim jager heaters I'm using in my sump. I have a 29G display and a 20L sump. Guessing around 40 gallons of water total. I plan on getting an apex for added piece of mind.

Depending on the temp you keep your house and lighting, do you even need a heater? I havent used a heater in 3 years. Tank stays between 76-78 in winter. May drop to 74.8 if I leave the window cracked. And summer with help from a fan temp stays roughly 79-81. So sorry about your issue, that is a reason I stopped using them.

Maryland, huh? Is that MH heating it up? (compensating) Sometimes there is an "offset" so to say.

I assume you either work from home or retired, lol!! Most people like myself have to go to this place called work, 5 days a week and it's unfortunately located in another building away from the tank. :p

im crossing my fingers too...and thanks ill try not to let it discourage me. :( at least the red slime is gone (and any flatworms that may have been in there) that was another issue I had.... i loved my snails and clownfish tho :( I also had all sort of other creatures living in the rock.

Good stuff...

Give it a KISS though... (don't overthink things.)

GL. :)

Now that this has happened to you, would you consider getting a controller? Or is it not in the budget? It's one of the most important pieces I plan to buy when i'm ready to take the plunge.

well maximus im not sure what a controller even does.... lol but it sounds like it would have helped this issue.
