Tank temperature

Just a friendly reminder that with the warmer weather, our tank temperature may be rising. I just checked my tank temperature tonight, and the thing was at 84.5F. :eek2: It's time to get ready for the warmer weather. Time for me to go out and buy some cheap fans for evaporation cooling.

I'm going through the same concerns right now. Had to run A/C between 4pm - 7pm the last several days, but that still didn't help significantly. It doesn't help that my sump and fuge are all in the garage which is heating up quite nicely. Hopefully, my plans on insulating the garage door will help.

yeah I just came back from vacation and the temp was 86. I floated some ice in a bag for a while until the temps got back to normal levels. I also decoded to make a 3" air gap on each side of my glass cover to allow for more heat to escape through the top. Everythings going good temperature wise now.

I plugged in a temperature controller into my fan and heater today. According to my coralife TRUE digital themometer, my tank temperature is 79.8F. However, my Ranco ETC (same thing as the Aqua Logic dual temperature controller), the temperature of my tank is 82F. I guess it's time for me to find a lab grade mercury thermometer to calibrate (if possible) the temperature controller and the corallife digital thermometer. Now it's off to try to find a lab grade themometer.

If someone has a lab grade thermometer, can you bring it to the next MARS meeting so people can try calibrating their thermometer.

Hey Shawn - At work, my server rooms and all the technical staff offices uses the Vornado fans. They are quite pricey, but those things can move some serious air and are relatively quiet. The other problems with them is that Vornado does not make any small fans at all - all of them are quite large, so it will be difficult to fin one into a hood.

I just bought two Lumenarc mini's with AC option. I am thinking about putting a computer fan on them to cool down the system. For those, I prefer the Panasonic Panaflo low volume fans. They are virtually quiet.

Rich - My only concern is that the temperature range that those fan sensors range are outside our aquarium temperature. 85F inside of a computer case is VERY cool. 85F on our tank is very hot. So if you think about it, the fan may be running at low speed the whole time.

Update: I did a quick test of all the thermometer based on everyday stuff I had laying around the house. You can do the same thing to test your thermometer.

I put a bunch of crushed ice into a insulated mug. Poured in cold water. Put the mug inside a small Styrofoam box. Packed ice inside the box, surround the mug. Put the lid back on. Let the thing sit for 30 minutes to equilibrate. Open up the container, and pulled out most of the excess ice from the mug so that no ice (or very little ice) is actually touching the probes. . Put the three temperature probes (two corallife and the controller probe) inside of the mug. Put the lid back on. Let the thing sit for 30 minutes (to equilibrate again). Took reading. Open up the cooler to verify that there was still some ice in the mug. If there is no ice in the mug, your reading could be wrong.

Expected results: The temperature reading should be around 32F. Actually the temperature should be a fraction of degree lower because sublimination. If I really wanted to do this more correctly, I would have used RODI water and RODI ice.

Result:

Controller reported: 32F
First Coralife thermometer reported 29.8F
Second Coral life thermometer reported 32.5F

Conclusion: The controller was correct, and the Coralife (mentioned in the previous post) was incorrect.

I still need to get a lab grade thermometer. :D

Minh,
I can bring by a thermometer sometime this week. However, we use the alcohol ones now instead of the mercury. Much less of a hassle to clean up when you break em ;).

Quit breaking the thermometers Arlan

You wouldn't believe how easy it is to break those things. About 6 months to a year before they took the tanks down in Storer Hall, the new AALAC rules required the department to start monitoring the temp of the tanks at least once a day. I think Matt was taking care of those tanks at the time. Anyhow, he quickly found out that puffers and glass thermometers don't mix...

I just hook up my 1/4hp pacific coast chiller last week to get ready for the sunny summer. I usually remove the chiller during winter and shelf it but now its back again chilling my tank down to 78deg.

Right now - my tank is maintaining a temperature of 80F during the day. However, when the MH comes online, my tank temperature is going up to 82F. When the temperature is above 80F, a large fan blows over the pump. I am concern what the tank temperature will be like when it gets even hotter.

Quit being cheap, and buy a chiller. My tank stays at 79 with the chiller. As much time and money we have in our tanks, you need to protect that investment.

hmm interesting, My tank stays a tad under 79 thru out the day.

I have a digital in the tank and a glass in the refugium

My thermo on my ac says its about 70 in the house, Dont know how correct it is, but the house does stay very cool and I keep all windows and blinds closed.

or just turn your ac on haha.. with that an a fan or two no worries

For us 'cheapos' that use fans, I came across a nice clip-on today:

As much as I hate Wal-Mart, I'm glad I made the emergency run for diapers there.

It's low profile makes positioning easy, and less of an eyesore:
