tank too full

I did my weekly water change last night and tonight ... my tank is too full which leading my hang on overflow box to not skim the surface. I am getting a film on top. If take water from the tank and put it in the sump... It readjusts immediately. If I raise the overflow box up so that it will skim the surface... it pulls more water from the sump to become too full again. Any ideas?

that is what I have done as a temporary fix but my return chamber is now slowly filling up. How come it has run perfectly for 8 months and now it isn't?

what would happen if you siphoned some water from the display and did not put it in the sump?
or siphon water from the sump? not sure if it would make a difference.

One of two things- either something is in your return line blocking the flow, or your return pump is too strong and needs to be throttled back. Pulling water out of the aquarium wont help, it will just cause your sump level to drop.

Is something obstructing the line to the sump?
This was my first thought. If it has been running for eight months with no problems, it is all together possible that your drain line is clogged some how.
