tank turnover

how many gallons an hour would be good for a 55 gal or a 75 gal tank... would ilike to have it good enough for almost anything i want to raise.

There's a "Subscribe" button down at the bottom of the thread. Bumping a post takes it off the unanswered list.

10-30x the tank's capacity in gallons per hour is a common range given, so 550-1800 gph for the first tank.

depends on what you're planing to keep there. 4-10x unless you're keeping SPS or LPS, then you need 20-30x.

One of the things you'll eventually learn in this hobby is that you can't have 1 tank that is optimal for all possible inhabitants. You need to pick inhabitants with similar requirements and build your tank around them. If your going SPS...then lots of flow and not a lot of nutrients. Other types of inhabitants have different needs (less flow, more nutrients, less/more light, etc.).
Also "flow" and "turnover" are 2 different things...turnover typically reflects water sent to a sump for filtration. "flow" is total water movement including the "turnover", closed loops, power heads, etc.

People have total "flow" anywhere from 5-100 times volume and have nice successfull tanks.

Typical "turnover" rates I usually see are around 10 times volume.

How do you calculate tunze or closed loops? Just add it w/o any adjustments?

Are you referring to calculating GPH? If so...

tunze...no adjustments needed calculating GPH...

closed loops...just count the bends in the piping...vertical runs of pipe don't really count. Use the calculator here on RC to get the GPH based on those bends, pipe size, # returns, pump, etc.
