Anyone ever make a DIY detritus vacuum:

Something likt this?

I run a BB tank and although have very good flow I get some dead spots in the hard to reach areas behind my rock. Would like to figure a way to have a small wand that I can bend to reach these hard to get to spots and vacuum up detritus. A regular siphon just does seem strong or fast enough.

Any ideas? Do some use wet vacs? Anyone have experince with this system? Very pricey though.

Filter sock + maxi jet + flexible tubing

Use the tubing that you put on the inlet to suck up detritus and direct the tubing you put on the outlet into the filter sock. This should help remove the vast majority of your detritus.

I just built one this weekend, I used about 4 sections of 2" PVC each about 4" long. I put each together with a 2" coupler without glue just snug. Inside each piece I glue in a piece of egg crate cut to size, and then I use cut filter pad in the bottom two or three sections with some sponge material in the top section.

I cap the top with a PVC endcap with a 1/2" hole and thread in tubing that goes to a Maxi-900, then a gravel filter on the other end. I stand the whole PVC filter stack in my sump so the filtered water just keep cycling

It worked great, pulled all kinds of junk off the bottom of my Faux bottom.

Wish I had done it earlier.
