Tanked?

Interesting to see the tanks they build. I don't agree with the way they acclimate the fish by just throwing them in a new, uncycled tank.

I Discussed this with a professional Saltwater tank Mt Company and they said that they probably made a contract where they would replace the fish anyways if they died, they also said the profit margin was probably high and that most of the fish would not last 2 months.
The only thing they cared about was how the fish looked on camera.

The promo trailer was enough for me...I tried watching the other night, but couldn't last until 1st commercial break. I truly hope those yahoo's practice better husbandry when camera's are off.....

I very much enjoyed the show. It was entertaining to me. The tanks they made were interesting. Looking fowatd to the next episode to see what they build !

oh yeah, it was cool to see them pour 1,100g of HOT tap water in the new tank. then dump buckets and buckets of ice out of the ice machine in the tank to cool it down and to top it off with prolly the cheapest salt mix you can find. then add fish.

hopefully they did a water test on the tank:uhoh2:

W.T.Frick? I kinda shuddered at some of their practices in preview trailer; but if this is how they operate, GOOD GRIEF!! After reading some of our comments in previous thread about this show, they posted about all their experience in the biz, their good husbandry, & not to go by how a minute video had been edited; & to give them a chance...:angryfire:

I was looking forward to this show when I saw the trailer, I'm disappointed already without even seeing it yet! Who are these yahoo's??!! Were they big in the industry before they got the series contract?

and with the magic of editing. it only looked like they added over 100 fish to new system at the same time.

I personally liked the tank itself when it was done but hated how they set up same.day and packed those.tanks with fish and didn't even show really any guts of the system I think it gives everyone a false sense of what this hobby is really about and I can already see a lot of people watching thinking I can have a saltwater tank look how easy it is. When in reality we all know how hard it can be and costly mistakes people will make by watching that show when it should be more about the hobby and helping people get into it the right way. A lot of fish and livestock will pay the price for that show. Ok ill get off my soap box now

I watched 2 dvr'd episodes yesterday after working on my new 155 switch over. I think we may be able to thank editing and a made for tv, dramatized fake deadline for what seemed like negligence/cruelty. At first I was completely freaked out by what they were doing and the careless way they handled the set up and acclimation process. I continued making comments over and over as we watched it. My wife then tried to calm me by pointing out that they were wearing different clothes when adding the fish then they were when set up. Not to mention the tank was completely clear and according to the show they had just added tap water on top of a few hundred lbs of crushed coral. I'm hoping she was right and they edited this all together to make it seem to those who are not aquatically inclined as though they just pulled everything off by the given deadline.
Either way, I don't know that this show is for the true hobbyist. It is going to be geared to the masses who care far less about the actual animals and just ooooh and aaahh at the colors from a distance. To me, more eps about the guy who ordered the crazy kitchen qt system would be great, but something tells me that those who have never heard of RC would prefer to see more car and phonebooth tanks. Unfortunately, I think thats what future eps have planned for viewers. It does concern me the perception that this show may create. While most have heard the expression "pimpin aint easy", I hope this show doesn't confuse anyone -- reefin' aint either!

I like to watch it but I can't handle the production and direction of these shows. Like American Chopper. All their monologues are written out and they read them into the camera trying to seem like it is natural, and it is not. I will continue to watch for the tanks and fish

Hopefully, but it wouldn't surprise me if they didn't. It may be true that there is some editing and that they don't actually run the water in, throw salt in, then toss the way too many, not necessarily compatible fish in, but it still gives the general public the idea that it can be done like that...

Most of these reality TV shows ARE scripted. That is the sad truth today in TV, 2nd takes, clever editing to make characters fit, staged accidents... They found out that if you try to make a non-actor read lines, they sound dumb. So instead they give them a general theme, say guidelines on how the episode is supposed to come across then let them ad lib. This way the directors get what they want without making the show seem completely scripted.

I'm giving the show the benefit of the doubt simply based on their work prior to this reality show. If you have never worked with uppities, they want it all at the snap of a finger. If you told them their 50K tank could not have fish for 2 months, they would move on to the next guy who WOULD stock it. Image is much more important than some spare change for new fish..
