did anyone happen to see all of season 1 of tanked? (a full 6 episodes lol)

anyways was wondering what your thoughts on the show was? they did make some AMAZING tanks. but here are my questions.

1) how do they add fish right away?
2) how are corals added right away?
3) how does everything live without the tank being cycled?

just wondering what their secret is? ive been told let the tank cycle for atleast a month. any ideas or input on the show?

I saw an interview with one of the owners where he explains how the show is for ENTETAINMENT purposes... Just whatch the show and enjoy it.. but dont follow what they appear to do in the show...

wasnt going to do it lol, was just wondering how they added the fish and corals right after filling it.

Well they use inserts, fake coral. And they claim they treat the water from tap.. so im guessing they use water conditioner and thats it..

They certainly don't wait for the tank to cycle but they do appear to allow the tank settle a bit. In the three episodes that I've seen the tank water is cloudy when they first put the water in and it seems much clearer by the time they add fish. Not sure how they avoid casualties from the ammonia spike.

hummm, just strange but then again when you have people putting 10+ grand into a tank i guess they give you all the best gear and such.

The interviews mentioned above did clue in on some of the issues that we saw with the show. They claim to culture the filter media and such ahead of time and that the water it pumped from a truck not from the tap. There was a few other things they mentioned get "edited" out that they hoped may make it into future episodes so show the husbandry side.

As for deaths and such I personally assume these customers also buy a maintenance plan which covers the livestock so anything that dies is simple replaced. These tanks are furniture to these people and they don't seem to be overly interested in the living creatures caged up.

Spider - they do get casualties. In all reality those clowns don't have a clue about how to property set up and manage and aquarium. They deal with people that have enough capital to just replace the dying/dead fish with new ones. They treat these animals like nothing more than a worthless decoration.

Dont assume that.. rememver they have to air what animal plannet wants.. their job is not to teach.. os to entertain.. think about how board regular people not in the hobby will be if they go scientific.. the show would be cancelled..

I dont think they are clowns.. they are simply business men.

yea i had a feeling. in one episode where they are making a mob themed tank they have to add ice to the water because it was being added to the tank from a sink that only let out hot water. so they where pouring in bucket after bucket of ice. and then as soon as the temp hit the right temp, boom they dumped in the fish.

12 episode season, should hit Spring 2012

season 1 was only 6 episode lol. and from what i have read online season 2 is only going to have like a 12 episode season. i think they should add more education and in return it would make for more episodes. after all it is on discovery channel. i coulda sworn that was the channel for learning ?!?!?!? lol

When you put 50 fish directly into a 250g gumball machine (which is an awesome idea and looked really cool) including 4 oriental sweetlips, and any other fish that is chosen based on how "cool" it looks instead of how to actually take care of it, it gives the hobby a bad name, and on cable television as well. Sure, the general public doesn't understand what they are doing, and it draws people in to see the pretty colors. If the guys from Tanked learn something about the livestock they are putting in their customers' tanks and show it on their show for all to enjoy I would stop bashing them. But...they don't, so it is my humble opinion they are not responsible reef keepers, or even responsible reef setter-uppers. They are wizards with acrylic though. I must say that.

I've seen oriental sweetlips recommended tank size between 200 and 300 gallons. Probably not the best idea to put them in a circular tank though. They are doing it on national TV.

I don't really think they give the hobby a bad name though. There are plenty of people keeping all sorts of tangs in 55 gallon tanks that do that. I know that life in customers tanks doesn't actually belong to the customer a lot of the time. The aquarium company can replace fish (like when they get big and/or aggressive), frag corals to sell in their shop, etc.

Note: I've never seen an episode of Tanked. I don't think they're as irresponsible as the RC community things they are though. If their fish died all the time, they would have to replace them, which would drive their costs through the roof.

Tanked is an entertaining show. Nothing more. It's not their real business reality.

Fact 1: it has upset A LOT of people in the true reefkeeping hobby and industry.

Fact 2: Much of what they do and show on the program is bogus. It's for entertainment purposes only. Much is actually constructed script wise and the scenarios where how tank set ups were done- were all staged. The tanks were real. But not exactly done how it was "made up" and shown on the program. A Lot of the ridiculous looking scenarios were done on purpose for drama and comedic action. (Note: throwing ICE BLOCKS into saltwater, does NOT really work in keeping salinity/chemistry at a proper level.) Hopefully not everyone believes this was totally real... Also scenes are often cut on several different days not just one- like it looks on the show. Even the "clients" have agreed to certain aspects of how it's portrayed on the program. Not that the final set up for them actually happened that way outside of the filming.

Fact 3: Their real life custom jobs are done correctly and with guidance + maintenance programs for clients.

Fact 4: If their real life business (Not shown on the entertainment program on Animal Planet) were as bogus as the program portrays certain scenarios, they would be losing way too much money. The fact is the company is booming and much larger employee base than shown on the program.

Fact 5: Their television reputation may be tarnished for hobbyist viewers. However, their real life business reputation is not tarnished with the majority of their paying clients.

Fact 6: Many people, including people from Tanked itself (ATM) agree that a more realistic documentary style, more instructional type of show would be more beneficial to an accurate depiction of the hobby. However, "Animal Planet" who's jumped on the "Reality-like" TV show bandwagon- prefers a more main stream unrealistic program for this particular show. Why? because the sillyness is drama and it sells. Especially to TV viewers that are "TV Viewers" Not neccesarily hobbyists who know better. It's a ratings game.
Unfortunately, a more factual based learning program as an alternative is considered (by the Animal Planet network) too boring to make it on tv with non-hobbyist viewers.

My Personal opinion,
We shouldn't take everything we see on TV so seriously. Most of it is for Fun. Much is bogus and demoralizing drival out there.(Alot of other shows ex: Jersey shore and just about 90% of other tv programs- are crap.)

Personally I prefer a lot of documentaries, nature shows & history. But obviously that is not most tv programs.

+1! Totally agree on every point...PERSONALLY, I dig the show.

I hear they have a product that cycles your tank instantly and allows you to add the entire livestock in same day. Have yet to watch it. I need to get cable and some free time.
