Tankmate for my achilles

I have a juvenille achilles tang (approx. 2.5 inches long). I was curious if there is any other tang that would be suitable to house in the same tank or will the achilles just fight with another tang.

I see your new to the hobby. Welcome to the addiction! ;)
I also see you have a 65 gallon. Thats not going to last the achilles very long at all.
You started with a very hard fish to keep. I suggest skimming thru the achilles primer up top. Good luck.

I dont know if you are new to the hobby, but your post count indicates you are new to Reef Central. So welcome. Is the Achilles in you 65g or do you have another larger system? How long have you had the achilles?

Your achilles tang will NOT get along with any other popular tang...especially powder blues, browns, yellow tang or any other acanthuras tang.

This effect is made worse the smaller the tank. As others have already pointed out, you might be in trouble already. A second tang in a small tank with an achilles might be a disaster.

In the short run, getting that fish to survive in a smallish tank is problematical. But adding another tang is definitely advised against.

get a wrasse or something. let the achilis be the king. he'll behave and look really nice to boot.

Thanks to the tang police for showing up again. Yes i know the achilles will need a bigger tank. As it stands it is a very juvenille tang and it is doing very well in the current tank it is in. I am glad that there are so many people concerned with the conservation and well being of marine life like I am. All that i really was curious about was if there was any other tang or tang like fish that would be in any way compatible with the achilles. Yes I have read the primer. Yes I have looked into the fish and talked with my LFS. These forums are to share knowledge and experiences of the other people posting here. Thank you to the people who actually had some input that pertained to the topic of the forum it is greatly appreciated. A little bit of help will go quite a long way to building a solid knowledge base. Before trying to condem another person who shares the same passion that you do look into the situation and get some facts.

^^^^
Sticking to the subject of the fish here; I had an Achilles in my 100g along with a Yellow Scopas and other non-Tang species fishes and all got along fine. The Achilles was the dominant Tang and he/she made it known. Truly the King of the tank and and Awesome prize fish!

Rule of thumb, keep a pair of cleaner shrimp or a cleaner wrasse close to your Achilles as they do tend to be Ich Magnets...due to temp flux, water quality, "staring"!

Thanks reefsic good to know. I do already have the 2 shrimp and the wrasse. Its very comical to watch the tang swim by and the shrimp jump off the rocks to clean the tang.

Yeah, the Achilles seems to know when he needs 'em!

You have an achilles tang in a 65 gallon tank and are asking which tangs can go in with it? Am I following so far? My advice to you WAS on topic...you should put no other tang in there, and get the achilles housed properly. That is my advice.

Oh and how did you read the primer, talk to the lfs, and read up on the achilles and still put it in a 65 gallon tank? I can't say I've ever heard anyone give that advice (and if they did, it would be bad advice), if any lfs says its ok, you shouldn't shop there, and I don't recall ever seeing this advocated in the primer.

"tang police" was intended as a pejorative which, in effect says, I will do what I want to do and don't really want advice. And by the way, cleaner shrimp do not pick off ick, they have no real effect on it at all.

Just for tampa's peace of mind
1 an achilles that size will do fine in a tank that size as long as it is under 4 inches
2 the 65g tank is not a permanent home for the tang
3 I did do all the research that is how i know that it is fine in the tank it is in
4 I already figured out that it is a fish that will not get along well with other tangs
5 All I was looking for was some first hand experience with achilles from someone who is willing to share

IF YOU ARE ONLY HERE TO CONDEM THEN YOUR TIME AND ENERGY IS WASTED. NOT EVERYONE IS A DUMB AS YOU THINK AND YOU ARE NOT THE SHERIFF OF FISHLAND.

Have a wonderful day everyone

To point 1...it won't get bigger than the magical 4" mark you mention because the tank is too small. To point 3...please show me this research that proves it's ok in this tank. To point 4...if you already figured out that it will not get along with other tangs, why post here asking about which tang to put in with it?

I'm not here to condemn, I'm here to give advice. My time and energy ARE wasted however, because you don't really want advice. You are going to do what you want anyway, so why post asking for opinions? You posted a thread asking what tang you can put into your 65 gallon tank that already has an achilles tang in it. The short answer was NONE. I just can't get over the fact that you've done research that says this is a good idea. If you put another tang in that tank you're going to have WWIII. (and you'll end up with 2 dead tangs)

Tampa its good to see that youve subscribed to the thread apparently. Your advice is sound but your delivery and reading skills are flawed. read the entire post. All you do is pick out what you believe to be negative and refuse to acknowledge that there are good points in the post as well. Just to reiterate

THE 65 GAL IS NOT A PERMANENT HOME FOR THE TANG
IT IS DOING FINE IN THE TANK IT EATS FLAKES PELLETS FROZEN FOODS AND DRY NORI

JUST TO MAKE SURE YOU HAVE READ IT ONCE AND FOR ALL

ALL I WAS LOOKING FOR WAS SOME FIRST HAND EXPERIENCE THAT SOMEONE HAS HAD WITH ACHILLES TANGS

YOU SIR OR MADAME HAVE YET TO GIVE SUCH FIRST HAND ADVICE BUT THANK YOU FOR SHOWING US YOUR FANCY BOOK READING SKILLS
