Tankmate Ideas

Hey guys, I'm new to the forums and marine aquariums! I started with a bumble bee grouper, then added a tesselata eel (tank is a 210 fowlr). BAD idea! Needless to say I have since gotten rid of the tessy, and I am left with the BBG (10" eyeball) and a small rectangular trigger. Looking to add more to the tank, just not sure what. Any ideas?

I'd get rid of the bumblebee before adding anything else, because it will just become an expensive snack at some point in time.

Bumblebees simply get too large for home aquaria.

Add some filefish and more triggers. Maybe even a small snowfake eel while your fish are small, it will grow up with them. You could also add a veriety of starfish since you dont have corals.

+1 That grouper will outgrow your tank quickly and will eat anything that fits in its mouth.

Starfish + trigger = dead starfish

When SFE get larger they will eat any fish they can catch if they're hungry. The idea that fish grow up together and become "friends" is just silly.

Ok. I guess I saw that coming. So if I ditched the grouper what could I put with the trigger? Would a panther grouper live well with the trigger?

if you liked your tesselata why not go with some eels, plenty of options in eels in a tank that size. i'd go with a miniatus instead of panther due to Smaller size and better color

Panther grouper would do okay. Keep in mind they get to be about a foot long.

Other fish to consider
Lunare wrasse
Klunzinger wrasse
dwarf angels
coris gaimard
maori wrasse (smaller species)
popeye catalufa/short bigeye
puffer (dogface, etc.)
purple or yellow tang

panther groupers get much larger than that. i believe around 3 feet. But on the positive side, i think all the fish you suggested would fit in great. I would also like to add:

Large angels
tangs
damsels
pebbletooth eels
certain clowns
more triggers

Uh, no. Panther groupers (Cromileptes altivelis) tend to top out around 18", but are usually a little smaller in the home aquarium. Large angels will outgrow a 6ft tank as will many tangs (Naso vlamingii, etc.), though there are a good number that will do fine in a 6 footer.

i just looked it up in scott w. michaels basslets, dottybacks & hawkfishes, and you're right. they dont get to 3 feet. they get to 27.6 in. But they still get much too large for a 210.
