Tanne's Dutch Fish-SPS-reef (DFSR)

I just took a small video of the angler catching a copepod: I hope you have as much fun as me fun watching it :)

Copepod. Tanu tells us this in the beginning of the post.

Thanks Dave... The problem is that I cannot really make out how much to feed the angler- or frogfish: I don't want to kill it by overfeeding it...

With such a cute fish in it's own mini-tank next to the 'large' tank it's not entirely impossible to nearly neglect the main tank, so I will post two overview-pictures :)

Picture as of yesterday. I did some minor maintenance and the tank looks a bit fresher again :)

That was awesome Tanu. I just got one of these fish and had no idea how he might function until I saw this. Very nice capture on video to actually watch what the behaviour would be like in the wild. Well done!

Peter, thank you for the compliments on the capture. I was just playing with my iPhone and took this lucky shot :) I like the way you describe the behaviour of this fish: 'how he might function'. Mine is getting tame, as he likes live brine shrimp (which I breed in a small bucket) he is getting used to the syringe I use to add these brine shrimp to his small tank. Very funny to see him angling the syringe :)

How is yours doing? It's time for pictures of all your hidden treasures (I assume you have more ;))

Your tank looks awesome Tanu. Love the rock work. Can we see a picture of your sump area?
Thank you Bob, you're not going to love the picture of the sump area... :(Although I do keep the skimmer, pumps and reactors clean and running, it is severely neglected. The last three years I spent lots of time finishing my Masters, next to my fulltime job. Time spent on the tank went to... Well... The tank, clearly not the sump ;) I am about to finish this Master, so I might need to spend some time to clean up underneath the tank ;)

What you see: Bubble King 200 deluxe, DIY zeovit-filter, in the middle filter floss and a bag with activated carbon, some additives. Mess.

What you don't see: RD 10.000 K return pump, auto top off, redox controller, tunze controller, UPS, chiller, timers, peristaltic dosing pump for balling salts, more additives. More mess.

What you don't want to see: Even more mess ;)

It's all good Tanu. Looks like your skimmers doing a great job. Do you test for K+ or add it to your system?

Hi Tanu, that video of your baby angler is one of the coolest things I've seen ever seen here on RC!

Sick looking tank as well! (meaning it looks spectacular, lol)

One question though, I see you have an all in one as the system caring for the baby angler, You plumbed that all in one into your main system? How? Did you just drill a hole in the all in one and and plumbed it inline?

Thanks and again thanks for sharing!

Bob, I do test every now and then. I brought some water back from Bali, Indonesia last year to check my testkits. I found out that my K+-testkit is quite accurate. I add some potassiumchloride (about a teaspoon on 10 gallons, about twice a month) to the top up water every now and then, and I also do regular water changes. I tend to keep the K+-level between 350-370 with this regime. As I don't regard the testkit to be very accurate, I rather have a reading slightly too low.

And yes, I love the BK skimmer, I've had tens of skimmers before this one, it was one of the best investments I've ever made for my tank. The skimmate in the picture is the result of 2 days skimming. This skimmer is really a set and forget skimmer, no more constant tweaking and adjusting, just empty and clean the cup every few days...

Mojoreefer, thank you for your compliments on the angler video, the tiny fish in it's small tank attracts nearly as much attention from visitors as the large reef ;)

I set up a small (about 10 G) tank for the angler, and as I like things to be simple and foolproof I just bought a small complete nano-tank with a 11 PC light already built in in the hood. I had the tank drilled so I made a small standpipe in it to act as an overflow. The tank stands close to the large reef, so I only had to use a small return pump from the sump of the large tank to the Angler's home and a pipe from the overflow to the sump. This way the small tank is connected to the main reef, so it benefits from the stability (temperature and water quality) of the large tank. Casa Antennarius has no separate filter; too noisy and too ugly :uzi: Apart from the small pump which serves the tank with water from the sump and the PC light the small tank has no equipment at all, unless anyone would call the tiny magnetic algae scraper equipment ;)

Next to some simple LPS- and soft corals, I keep a few snails with the angler to keep algae under control. I also have a bright green Heteropsammia cochlea (walking rhizo) and a yellow photosynthetic sponge I got from a German LFS, where it grew in the tank from which they sell LPS-corals. I try to keep some bright coloured animals, as I believe they assist the angler to keep it's natural bright colour as a way of camouflage.

So far the Angler is in my hands for two months, I don't think the colour has faded yet...

Today it was time to do some maintenance on the Angler's home. I normally let macro-algae grow freely, as the angler uses it to hold itself to. As the tank started to resemble a jungle more than a small reef, I pruned some.

Results: clean looking Angler's home, happy fish in the large reef :) Even the wrasses could not withstand some fresh Caulerpa :wavehand:
