Im just curious, does anyone use just straight tap water and have no problems. I dont myself but a guy at my work does and he has said he doesnt have any problems????

I Have for the past 4 years. No extreme algae problems. Some days are better than others depending on the amount of salt in the unit. I always test first, but I would recommend getting an ro/di unit. I'm just too cheap. :D

there is always one reefer that claims they use tap water and doesn't have any problems
The huge majority of reefers don't

As far as total dissolved substances
my tap water test out as 240ppm and my ro water tests out as 3ppm.
That's a whack of dissovled substances you are not putting in your tank by not using tap water

oops I didn't mean you Andrew :o

you obviously are very experienced and up on what to look for and measure but i can see someone quite newer to the reef hobby running into alot of phophate problems
even problems with live rock absorbing metals like copper over a long time
throwing out 1000 dollars worth of live rock is not something I would want to chance:eek2:

You know I can't believe this myself, but I walked into a Danbury Ct. pet shop that has about 500 gal. saltwater fish, corals and inverts and about 900 gal fresh water fish. I couldn't believe it when I was there they were doing a saltwater change using tap water, I asked if they at least put a declorinator in it ,as you may have guessed, the answer was not usually. They changed 50 gal.I have to admit that I have bought from them without any problems. Buy the way, they have a beautiful oyster I'm interested in. I posted some quest. about oysters in a separate post. Awaiting your help.
