Taqpol's 120g All In Stand Reef Build! (Pics)

My stand is constructed the same way Padrino constructed his. First I built a frame out of pine 1x4's and conected them with pocket holes.

Then I made three more.

I used the kitchen bar to construct the frame as i knew it was level and had lots of good places to clamp on. Unfortunately, immediately after I took this picture i realized my first set of screws was slightly too long and I screwed the frame into the table. Good thing my fiance doesn't read this...

Later I cut 3/4" oak plywood to size and made a top and bottom.

The frame was then painted white with Kilz primer and I covered it with 1/4" oak plywood.

I also added shelves made out of 1x8's and connected with more pocket screws.

I then went to town on the molding. Here's the finished product.

In other news, I hate molding. Especially when I don't have all the correct tools.

The stand isn't 100% done. I am still going to stain it a very light color to match my stand and i still need to construct a door. Wish me luck...

Lastly, random pics from when I had my camera out!

If you look back near the beginning of the thread you can see this cat at ~8 weeks old. I think it has put on a little more growth then my corals:

It also found its way on top of my fish tank one day. I think it was trying to fish!

...and a sneak peak into the culmination of this project:

hey alex did you buy new lens for it or justed using the one that came with camera? because you got so great micro pictures there; what set up r u using? thx man..

looks great Alex, what are the dims of the tank your building.
24"x24"x14" with the water level at 12". 29.3 gallons according to the internal dimensions. I'm pretty pumped.

I already had a really good lens (the Tamron 28-72 f2.8) which I shoot most of my general shots, but I did also pick up a Canon 100mm Macro with the purchase of the new camera. That is my macro lens and it is sweet.

You can find one for just under $500 if you look around or even cheaper if you are willing to buy a used one.

Here it is!!! I just painted the back wall black and I haven't been able to clean up a few silicone spills yet.

I used a lot of masking tape. It was absolutely essential with the black silicone.

I also need to know, preferably soon, whether you guys think this tank will be strong enough without any top bracing.

No comments about the rimless tank using 1/4" glass? I've been told a few times that it should be perfectly ok at this depth of water, but I'm beginning to second guess myself.

How long do you plan to let it cure before doing a water test?

yeah i would leave water in there for several days and in a spot that can take 24 gallons of water. i think it will be fine but the cautious side of me would second guess just like you are.

Most of the silicone was done last Thursday night, and the rest plus some reinforcement was done on Friday morning. I'm traveling across the state tomorrow to check out a grad school and won't get back till Sunday night, so it will have 9-10 days to cure before water ever touches it. I really wanted to get the tank and stand set up with saltwater before I left so that I could use it as a QT tank for when I get home but that doesn't seem to be in the cards.

I will probably do a freshwater test in the garage, but I am worried that a few days test won't actually be indicative of the actual strength. If a seem were to split it would probably happen years down the road.

I should probably stop worrying. Lots of AGA tanks use 1/4" glass that have more water volume and more height to the water column then I have. As was discussed previously on this thread water column height is the most important factor to pressure on a pane of glass.

I love your tank. Good job

I wish that I have the skills to make a tank like this. I will up grade from 20gal to 90 or more and make a tank that will fit a yellow tang my dream fish.

You know getting boring in Pullman and I had the 20gal for almost 3 years.

First questions form where did you get the tools and the glass?

Am I crazy for driving five hours one way for a fish store sale? Barrier Reef Aquariums in Seattle had a MASSIVE three year anniversary sale, and I walked away with a lot of goodies.

1x Half Black Mimic Tang
1x Baby Kole Tang (its smaller then a quarter!!)
1x Christmas Wrasse
3x Amazing looking SPS frags for $9.99
1x Head of purple/green Acanthastrea
1x ORA Spongodes

........and I even won the raffle my fiance really wanted!
2x ORA Semi Picasso clowns, a $140 value!
They are going in my frag/anemone tank that is unofficially my fiances tank. Maybe this will be her gateway drug.

Another Pullman reefer? You should come over and see my tank sometime!

The glass hole saws I ordered from www.glass-holes.com and all my glass I get from a local company called Sim's Glass. If you want to borrow any of my tools or need any help drilling glass just ask me. If you wanted a little tank like the one I just made I would make another one if you paid for the glass.
