TBS for over a year

Thank you guys for the compliments..
Bax, I wish I had your Major.. my job can be a Major PITA sometimes...
Abynum ,thanks for your concern, I hope the Mantis don't crack the glass first, from the stories I read .
If I break the glass at least I'll be home to do something.... like take pictures and show them to you guys .

lol I would keep a life jacket around the pool table just in case. Seriously though,it's a beautiful setup.

There is a link from your game room pics to misc. TBS shots. One of the pictures shows a load of what looks like blue sponge on one of the rocks. I think that's what's being asked about (and if not, I'll ask ;-) )

Those are Florida Ricordeas they come in purple, blue, orange, pink
I got a little of each but they did not come from TBS not even my LFS carry them, I got them from Ebay, just do a search on Ricordea

We've had the 150lbs of rock in our 75g for ~18 months. Never had any regrets. Yes, stuff dies, but there is still much more life than other live rock. If life is what you want, don't look elsewhere. If you want bare rock, go somewhere else. Feed DT's to help keep your clams, oysters, tunicates, and sponges. Grab the nasties when you get the chance and put them in a small tank of their own (they are cool to watch).

TBS rocks!

TBS rocks!

here are some pics of mine 1.5 years later.

loving it!

Here's my 7 month update http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=339082 . It's about 9 months now, 10 actually from the first half. Not many changes from the update. It seems fairly stable at this point and, if anything, some things are actually starting to come back, like the starlet corals. Also I'm fairly certain that the porcelain crabs are reproducing since there are dozens of really tiny ones in the tank, though I guess they could have come from eggs on the rock. Snails are definitely reproducing.
Still finding new stuff.
Definitely stop in to see Richard if you're in Tampa. Just make sure to let them know when you're coming so that someone will be there.

What species of snail, PRC?
I'll look them up when I get home, but I think they're cerith's. The long skinny ones, not the turbo's.
I've seen eggs on the glass several times and quite a few (like dozens) tiny snails, like a couple mm's long. I suppose they could've come in as eggs on the rock since I haven't actually seen the whole process but I think it more likely that they're breeding in the tank at this point.
I've also seen some tiny crab-like creatures on the glass but they're so small (<1mm) I can't tell what they are. My guess is porcelain crab larvae. I was going to try to put some in a small tank to watch them grow but I think they have a better chance of surviving in the big tank. Just hope they're not baby gorilla crabs!

PRC, thanks for the info. I'm going to be in Tampa around mid-july will definitely stop in to see those guys!

You actually got a fish with your liverock? And it survived? I assume from this that the rock is shipped in water?

Very cool.

Aye, The live sand and rock are shipped in water. Mine was quadruple bagged in 40 mil plastic. The inner most bag on one rock shipment had a little leak but because of the other three bags, not a drop was lost :D

I started out with TBS, but after things started dying off I was left with ugly boulders. I eventually got rid of all but the most interesting peice of TBS and replaced it with Bali rock from phishybusiness. Here are some pics to compare.

TBS after a little more than a year.

This is the only peice I kept after I redid my tank because it was the most interesting out of what I had (it does have some small holes in it and HAD some nice tunicates, and sponges). The only original life left on this peice is a small tunicate and some tubeworms on the underside, and a small spot of algea on the top. I used to feed phyto, but the sponges, tunicates, barnacles, and clams all slowly died. Almost all of the coralline you see only showed up after I added the Bali rock. Compare the porousity (is that even a word?) and shape of the TBS to the Bali rock.

I would have to say I'm much happier with the Bali rock than the TBS. With the Bali rock I'm constantly spotting new things popping up and the rock seems to be getting better with time. The TBS on the other hand seemed to be in a slow deline.
