TBS LiveRock in a 29 BioCube - New Setup

Note: This is a testimonial of my experiences with TBS

On a random urge I decided mid-december to set up a marine reef system again after several years. I spent a couple days reading on different forums and searching various spots on the web for reputable suppliers for LR/LS and after reading several of the testimonials and reviews decided to go with TBS.

I started off a bit leery of the process of ordering sight-unseen from an unknown entity and decided to mail the contact e-mail and ask a few questions first. Right away, Richard was in contact with me, answering my questions and explaining what I would be able to expect with regard to shipping time, delivery, and content. A few back and forth mails and reading the extensive ammount of information available at the TBS website, and I was ready to place my order for "The Package", as it is referred to.

I was put at ease by Richard's accessibility and willingness to communicate with his customers. Within a day, all my first shipment items were waiting for me at the airport.

Due to circumstances outside of TBS or my control, the items were unavailable overnight as they sat in a chilled warehouse waiting for the 5:30 opening. The items were so well packed and with enough water and insulation that everything was in perfect shape when I got them home and unpacked them. I had some very interesting critters show up once I placed the rocks and sand into the new tank. I arranged what I recieved as best I could, and started in on the intial task of getting the tank cycle started.

Approximately 4 days and 3 partial water changes later, all my levels were at optimal readings, and I sent Richard mail to prep and ship the second portion of "the Package". At this point, my tank was looking pretty good, the rocks I recieved had some amazing life and shape, many worms, live barnacles, live clams, and a ton of snails and random crabs started making their way out. Additional hitchhikers worth mention were a donkey dung cuke, a long haired urchin, and several crabs (more on them later).

When I received the shipping manifest from Richard for part 2 and realized there were 3 more boxes headed my way (making 6 total), I realized I had a bit more headed my way than I had expected.

Its important to note, I was already very happy with how things were arranged in the tank, and the lifeforms which were appearing in the rocks.

The second set of rock put the first to shame. More baranacles, several orders of magnitude more living organisms, some frags (gonipora I believe), and several fan worms and small anemones, many random sponges, plus a few plants stuck to the rocks. In addition to these items, the clean-up crew was unpacked and acclimated and placed into the tank.

I normally place high expectations on things and ask a lot, but was completely blown away by the value and quality of the items I received and the whole transaction end to end was smooth as could be.

I'm starting up a 45 gallon cube after being out if it for a year due to the move to Florida. I previously had a 29 gallon which was made of Figi rock. It was beautiful with respect to shave and holes, etc. Of course it didn't have much live which you have to build over time but am wondering if somethings are better worth the wait.

I live about 20 minutes from TBS. I have emailed Richard (who was awesome about getting right back to me) but he will not let me view some actual rock as he's not open to the public so I'm not sure if I'm going to buy sight unseen. I've heard wonderful things regarding the life and extras you get but am more concerned about the actual rock itself. I've read how dense it is so I'm concerned about needing twice as much and all the water it will displace, the porousity where critters can hide, the shapes as I've read a lot of it is all round and the color looks very brown in many of the pictures and his videos. I'm also not sure I want barnacles. Maybe I'm still a little too new to the hobby and am not trying to be negative... just looking for more info.

Do you have a pic of your entire tank I could see rather than each critter? When did you get your rock? What is the live sand like? Looks very brown also... I kinda like white live sand.

Thanks!!!

Hey Nick congrats on the purchase, things are looking great. It's responses like yours thats making it hard for me to take my time to finish setting up my tank before I order my 65 LB package from Richard. Keep us posted, again great job.

That onion nem is a pretty cool hitcher.

To Ruffreef, you can usually let Richard know what kind of shapes you want and he is pretty accomodating. The rock is probably comparable to the fiji that is around these days as far as density. Not as light as the tonga branch, but not super dense, and very nice shapes imo. You don't need any extra.

If you really want really light rocks, ask him about the dry rock he has. Look at the sticky in this forum. It is about the best you can get. The sand is white, but is mixed in shells and bits and crushed coral. It is what is naturally in the ocean. If you wan't the super white look, you can get dead sand. This stuff actually has worms and all sorts of critters in it.

If you are really picky about stuff, I would get about 80% dry rock from him and a few choice pieces of LR to seed it. Since you are close, shipping isn't an issue. The live sand will give you a better ecosystem in the tank, but the choice is yours. It isn't the pristine looking stuff a lot of people buy, but is real.

Sorry to the OP for highjacking, but I figured I'd help out RR with some info.

I have a 90 tank with white crushed coral and TBS LR and a few pieces of FIGI and a 35 gal with TBS LS and LR.
As far as colors of the rock, it depends on your lighting what it turns out like.

Example:1
My 90 gal. has 4ft t12 VHO lighting 2= Super Actinic and 2= Actinic White. This will really grow the coraline alge very well, my colors are dark red, light red, light green, light purple and dark purple from the figi rock on some of the tbs now and other colors on the figi also.
Different kinds of calerpa alge, red grape like and green grape like, and bright red fuzzy looking stuff alge.

Example:2
My 35 gal. has plain t8 lighting 2= Actinic and 2= 10000K output and the same rock shipped at the same time in that tank don't have any growing in it.

As far as needing to order more tbs rock then figi is not true at all.
Plus Richard is very well known for sending you much more then what you order. What you see in the pics. from folks here is what everyone gets, (Great looking stuff) That is what he sells. IMO

I put rock up to the top in the 35 gal and still had 4 pieces left over, each about 6" in size.

Example:3
So I put the 4 pieces in a 29 gal tank with my sea horses and 30lbs.TBS live sand. I use cheap 2= 6500k t12 from Lowes for my horses and with this lighting the rock and sand grows all alge like crazy so I have to remove some every week or so, but the coraline gets covered with up with other type of alge that my horses like to hunt in and hide in.

All of my LR has many holes and dif. shapes.
As far as the TBS LS vs White sand, I used to like the white sand better but after a few weeks with the TBS LS I wish I had went with TBS LS in the 90 gal. also. The TBS sand stays a lot cleaner because of all the critters in the TBS sand, but it really boils down to what you want and like.

Sorry, for the bad spelling and for going on and on trying to address your comments and questions.
Good Luck on what ever you choose to go with.
