TBS Rock

Hey there Kyle! Your tank is looking great! All of those stony corals you've got on your rock is sweet.

How much current is the candelabra gorgonian getting? They seem to enjoy being in a medium water flow. I put a piece in a corner where the water movement was almost nil and the polyps did not fully extend and it began to shrink and die back.

As for the anemone bothering the gorgonian...good question. My flower anemone sits on the sandbed with its foot deep in the sand under a rock so it is not anywhere near the gorgonian. The condylactis is another story, though. It put itself near some of the corky frags and those polyps did not come out at all. It looked like the frag was dying so I moved it away from the condy and they are recovering now. If anyone asks you, "What would happen if you touch the anemone?" you can tell them it would sting you. If they ask, "Does it hurt?" you can tell them "YES!" I had welts on my arm for 3-4 days after moving those corky frags.

Well it has been a few months and I must say everything is going great except for the Mantis. Which I think is way smarter than I am. I have tried everything to get him out of there but no luck. He has made a number of holes for him self. The only other issue I have is that my phosphates are out of control and I am working on that. Everything else is going good. My candleopra is not very happy as it appears the flow is to much for him so I continue to put him in other areas to see if he will open up all the way...

I will post pics very soon

Thanks

I will be making a no fail (if it goes in, it doesn't come out) acrylic trap. If it works well for me I would be happy to loan it once my critters get trapped. At least I will post pics. Sounds like a good project for today since I should get rock this week. How big is your mantis?

Kyle, sorry to hear about the phosphates. Did you put a skimmer on your nano? If you didn't you may want to consider gettting one. There is a pretty good one for small tanks that hangs over the back. If you do have one and your PO4 is still high then you could try a product called Purigen. I've heard it called a skimmer in a bag. I use it with my 6g and I have no PO4 problems.

As for Noah's trap, it quite ingenious. I've kept my mantis shrimps because they do stir the sand under the rocks in addition to providing more surface area for bacteria to colonize by creating holes in the rocks or clearing out existing holes. They also help clean up any uneaten food on the bottom.

While an excellent media IMO and one that I use, Purigen will not remove phosphates. It will however remove organics and produce ultra clear water. If phosphates are an issue you'll need to run a good GFO (granular ferric oxide) media and also growing lots of macroalgae in a fuge will help to some degree.

Howard, thanks for the info. Where else can I find GFO besides ebay? Also are you using a reactor with GFO or just a bag?

Thanks
