No, i'm planning to use a hob overflow the u-tube type. so i can move it around.

The only problem I see with a HOB overflow is the risk of losing siphon. I hate to push things on people but in this case I really recommend our overflow for one simple reason. It has a top and bottom intake and is far less likely to lose flow due to surface level changes. On the down side its flow rating is low, only about 350gph. Just be sure to choose a good overflow and position it in the center where the water level is stable.

Or get a drilled reef ready tank with a built in overflow....

I'd just get a rr tank if I were geting a new tank...

Well i have this same overflow in my tank for about 2 years. My return pumps turns off every night and starts again in the morning, I have never had a problem losing siphon. Do you think the wavebox would cause some type of problem with this type overflw?

I am more worried about drilling a tank because i have heard really bad stories of tanks cracking.

when I posted to get a "drilled reef ready" I am refering to the maker of the tank doing that for you in the factory.

like the All Glass Mega flow tanks for example....

all you do is hookup some parts they provide in the kit.

no cracking -- and they warrenty the tank and use tempered glass -- tempered is stronger glass.

of course all glass is just one source of rr tanks.

I guess it *should* as long as it re-starts the flow ....

whats happens if you draw off a few gallons of water ?

does the return pump keep running dry?

if you dump the water back in does the flow auto-start 100% of the time ?

the pump won't run dry since i have an ATO system.


The overflow has never given me trouble and i have my return set to turn off at night and back on in the morning. It restarts every time.

I think as long as you attach that pupy real good you wuld be OK, but then again I don't have one. I wish I could, but IO have a corner overflow.
