Tell or show me your sumpless tanks

Guys-

My tank is a Lee Mar 44g, 36"X18"X15", eurobraced, starphire glass.

My filtration is accomplished via live rock and a Tunze Turbelle (used mostly
for circulation. I feed 4-5 times a week with a homemade recipe, consisting
of cyclopeez, formula 1 and 2, artic-pods, nori, selecon, shrimp, scallops,
algae paste, golden pearls and the "kitchen sink". I dose 5mm (capful) of
iodine, magnesiumand calcium weekly. I do a 10% water change with Catalina
water once a month. I top off with vending machine water when needed.

My lighting consists of a MH 175w 20K, supplemented by 2 t-5 39w actinics.

I do not usually test parameters - unless I notice something wrong with
fish or corals.

This is the HOB refugium I use. I don't think you need a refugium if this is going to be FOWLR. I'll suggest you save up the $, and if needed, invest in a protein skimmer if you have a hard time keeping nitrate down. However, if you don't overstock or overfeed, and change water diligently, you should not have problems with nitrate, and IME fish don't usually get affected by some nitrate unless it is really overboard.

Happy reefing. :)

firerock, simply awesome. Can you post pictures of your equipment setup? and same questions as above.

This is a photo of my 46 gallons bowfront mixreef tank taken recently. You can see the T5 tek light, fans, powerheads, and a glimps of skimmer w/ skimmer box, HOB refugium, and fluval outlet. There are about 80lb of LR and 40lb of LS. That's pretty much all there is. The tank has been set up since October last year, you can see a photo of the initial setup in my gallery.

I use Randy's receipe for Cal & ALK, and I also use vending machine water (Glacier) like Dennis. 20% WC is done every 3-4 weeks, and carbon & Phosban are changed at the same time or whenever needed.

My wife feeds the tank brineshrimp and cyclopeeze. She target feeds every thing. Phytofeast & Seachem Reefplus are usually dosed once a week.

My 16 gallons bowfront FOWLR has Fluval for running carbon & is lighted by the aquarium light that came with the tank. There's about 10lb of LR and 2-3lb of LS. That's all there is in that tank. WC is done with the reef tank water during schedule maintenance. Due to limited lighting, that tank hardly has any algae, and virtually no pests like aiptasia. However, coralin algae also don't grow very much.

Happy reefing. :)

I had a sumpless setup for about 1.5 years. I loved it. Saved space, less noise, less $$ spent. Too bad I bumped my head and decided on a full blown setup :D

Cool thread. I run both my systems (26 and 75) sumpless. I personally think you can keep water quality excellent with just water changes. On displays larger than this (75), it can be a drag changing the amount of water needed for consistent decent water quality though. Freeing myself from the whole return plumbing/overflows/skimmers/etc has been the best thing i have ever done for my enjoyment of the hobby. I can't imagine ever going back to the constant cleaning/monitoring of a sump type system. A few powerheads and a heater is a small exchange for an overflow in the display imo.

My equipment inside the 75 is four maxijet 12's, and a heater. The 26 has a maxi 1000, a smaller powerhead that i'm not sure of the flow, and a heater. Thats it. I have two brute containers (33 gallons i think) that i keep water mixed and ready to go. Takes me all of about 15 minutes to change out water in both displays.

Devoting a powerhead for surface agitation is a must as nicole mentioned. You will get a "slick" if you do not. One powerhead blowing the surface keeps the surface crystal clear on both my displays.

I've made up my miind and I'm going sumpless w/ 1 seio 800 powerhead, 1 aqua c hang on skimmer, and not sure if I need it after hearing everyone 1 hang on penguin filter 350 gph. I may put just put pulsing xenia and watch it cover my tank and roughly 6-6 small to medium fish

thanks!.
