Temp to high??

Ok a cpl weeks ago i purchased a jbj 28hqi tank. It was up and established when i bought it as a whole package. My problem is keeping the temp down. Its staying at 85° when the main light is on. Is that too high? And with it being that high, could it cause problems aside from water evap?

I have same set up and experienced same heat issues with the 150w halide. I added azoo cooling fan to back. It will keep heat down but your evap will increase....you can always plumb a chiller in...costly though...My temp is 76-78 now, was 81-84. Hope this heps

You could also lower the temp a couple of degrees when the light is not on. You will still have the swing but it won't get so high. I have the same tank and am in the process of saving money for a chiller.

Yes it does help. Ill look into a cooling fan. Where did you mount yours? A chiller would be outta the question. Im planning on doing a led retrofit in the near future.

Mount it in back on the rim of tank. Mine is on right as i have my aquamaxx skimmer on the left. There are 2 legs that mount perfectly. Be amazed how it does the job.

yea your temp is WAY too high. i have the same nano cube as you and before i got my chiller, i got the azoo cooling 2 fan unit. it worked very very well from 84 to 77 or 78. evap is crazy tho as you will have to keep on top of that. they are pretty cheap too. here is the link.

Im going to go a diy route and get a computer fan from amazon. Make my own bracket to hold. Much cheaper route than going the drs fan they offer in the catalog.

Good luck dude, be careful with what kinda of computer fan you get. A buddy of mine tried that instead of getting a zoo fan and they failed on him. His temp went high and he lost some livestock. They also were pretty loud, I understand you are on a budget but you may be better off just buying the dual azoo fan the first time around cause it's a good chance you are prolly gonna end up spending about that much anyway IMO. I did the same for my 12g nano. Dropped my temps from 84 to 82 F.

Thanks for the heads up. I am thinking of selling off another tank setup that Im not using just so i can do the led upgrade. I have read a lot of good things about them in regards to heat, energy savings, to led life. Im just getting tired of high heat. And unfortunately am going to have to wait another till i get paid to do the fan. This is the first time dealing with mh lights. And really not liking it. I do love the tank just not the light lol.

Well here's an update. I changed out the heater to a different type. To see if it might have been the cause. And i changed how long the lights stay on. So far that has helped. The tank comes on at 10am and turns off at 8pm. The highest the tank had gotten up to today was around 82. Which is a lot better than the highest of 87. Im going to give it a cpl days. And if i can't get it to come down to 79 with the lights on. Ill put my other light on the tank that'll mount on the back. And put a light diffuser on as a lid so the fish don't jump out.

if you have the stock bulb i believe it is a ushio 14k bulb. i dont know if you have any corals or not in your tank, but i have my halides on only 6 hours a day...i added some led strips for actinic which is why i cut down the halide time, but 8 should b about your max..14k spectrum is the best spectrum for coral growth, so 8 hours should be enough plus you dont want to risk bleaching your corals under that light. also fish only require a minimum of 6 hours of light a day to produce the sufficient amount of vitamin d they require. just some food for thought. to be completely honest with you idk what route you're going for the led upgrade but from what i have seen it is going to cost just about as much as the chiller. before you take the dive give the azoo dual a try its a great product that does what is it suppose to. throw it on a cheap timer to turn on and off with your halide. also the research on LED lighting in a reef tank if that is what you plan on keeping instead of a fish only tank has not sufficiently IMO proved that it is continuously capable of maintaining corals. the par values through out the tank are not consistent at all. food for thought.
