What do you keep your temperature at? If you had the option, would you keep it cooler, or warmer. From what I've seen, most temps in the ocean are taken from the surface. From my "long ago" diving experience, this is not the case even 5 foot down. Just putting thoughts in my mind about where I'm gouin to keep my new set-up. Thanks!!!

I've read that many reefs run at upper 80's.....I run 82-83 summer and 77.5-79.5 winter....

The logic I've always used is that 86+ is the max. The lower the temp, the higher the range you have before you hit redline (within reason; I'm sure I stole this from Borneman, Paletta, i.e. someone more knowledgeable than I). 76-78 is optimal IMO. I've had my tanks regularly swing 78-83 in my old biocube, where I had no problem growing SPS.

My heaters are set to 78, temp will go up to 81 most days with halides.

I've run tanks as warm as 84 degrees in the past, but my current tank I keep at 78/79.

I've found that up to 84 degrees, things are fine, but above that, things get dicey. I've had heaters and/or chillers fail and temps get into the 90s - not something I'd recommend.

I prefer the 78/79 range because that gives me a buffer zone for higher temps, whereas an 83/84 reading is basically a degree or two away from a crash.

I’d keep mine 82-23 it’s just that it’s too expensive to warm them that much.

Is everybody forgetting about the reef suffering long term damage and bleaching from temps of 84+ in the wild? I am not talking about a swing, which can happen, but solid, never-going-back-down high temps. I would let nature be your guide here and keep the temp more like where the reefs are still thriving at 78-80 degrees with some swings.

77.5-80 tops so far is. My heater kicks on at 77.5 if needed, normally temp is 78-79, sometimes may get to 80 with the halides on. I keep my house cool and that keeps the tank temps in check.
