Temperature of reef tank?

I have no fish or corals in my tank yet but I was wondering what temperature it should be. Right now it is around 78-80°F Is that OK or is that too hot? Thank you! :)

I'm new to this hoby, but I have done a good bit of reading. To me it seems like temp is sort of subjecting. I believe if I'm not mistaken the great Barrier Reef stay on average 72-78F. Now again I'm very new to the hoby, but I look at it like this. If everything grows there naturally at that temp then why change it?

...because not all our fish and corals come from the great barrier reef (few actually). Temperatures in the Red Sea and Indonesia can get much higher.

Most on here will indicate anywhere from 78-82 is fine, though you will see ranges outside of this from some. I have limited saltwater experience but substantial biology experience and my own personal opinion is that while, yes most tanks can and do handle swings of temperature between 3-4 degrees, I prefer to keep things a bit more stable. My simple reason being that all things equal less instability to deal with leaves more energy for other tasks on a cellular level. I know that some may argue that in an actual reef the temps change wildly, but I would counter that my tank is not an actual reef and is missing many of the benefits, buffers and other unknown positives of the actual reef and any chance I can take to keep things optimal I will take. As far as actual numbers I believe that the higher end of the temp scale is preferable balanced against the dissolved oxygen content at higher temperatures. So for me I keep it between 81 and 82.

See, and you thought this was a simple question... LOL.

Hope this helps.

Well, thanks for all the info. I am learning as well. I have been keeping my tank at 75. Corals and fish seem to love it. But again I'm very new to the hobby.

my tank is constantly at 77 also its easier to check salinity but im lucky to have a cool place so it doesnt get warmer even in summer.

Mine was running a constant 76. After much thought I raised it to 77 and with summer in full swing now it runs 77 to a high of 78 during the hottest part of the day.

our tank runs 75 to 77 deg year round... But in the spring and sometimes in the fall when we can open the windows and doors in the house it will climb to 78. i have my chiller set at 78 and it has a 1.5 deg threshold . Heat will come on at 76 but the thank in the winter at night often drops to 75...

This range having the huge sump and refugium tanks in the basement make the heaters and chiller almost never run..
SO i think between 75 and 82 where ever your tank runs the most stable with less use of heaters or chiller is best.. STABILITY IS KEY

My tank usually varies between 76-85 throughout the year. One side of the spectrum in the summer, the other in winter. No problem.
