Temperature Problem

I have been running my 400 gallon tank for a little more than 2 years. I have always had an issue with the tank being a bit on the warm side.

I have 400 gallon display, 150 gallon sump, 1 hp pump, uv sterilizers, etc. I don't run my MH's that often because the tank really raises. The sump is in an unfinished basement with an a/c unit blowing on the tanks. I have never had to use my heaters.

Any suggestions of a low cost way to cool my tank down.

Thanks for your help.

Lorie

Get a Chiller......One solution that comes to mind. Or, try to use a fan to blow air across your sump. The water will evaporate much quicker but it is the cheaper of the two.

Have you used a lab grade thermometer to verify your temperatures? Sometimes, the displayed temps can be very far off.

What are you considering on the "warm side"? How many metal halides and what wattage are you using?

There are times my temps go up to 87. I have a aquacontroller to let me know the temps.

I will definately try to do the fans. We do have an A/C unit blowing on the tanks.

Is there a DIY for a chiller anywhere?

I would still check with a lab grade thermometer to make sure your AC is accurate...I don't trust any devices that haven't been kept honest with a high quality thermometer.

I would put a few fans blowing across your tanks surface. I put a shelf behind my tank to put the fans on to keep the water cool. I have an ACIII that turns them on and off to keep the temp at a constant 80 degrees. Do you have a closed canopy? You might need to modify that if so.

Where would be a good place to pick up a good "cost effective" lab thermometer ??

I got both of mine a couple years back from Carolina Supply which is where Dr. Ron recommended to buy them. I paid about $14/each I think. I'll see if I can find a link.

I have a 540gal and had the same problem. I run two small fans aimed between the MH lights and the surface of the water. It really helped!! Ocasionally during summer I have to float ice bags to lower temp. Still debating on getting a chiller.

is there a hood that you can vent?
check the pump for sure. Some pumps can add as much as 5 degrees
check each pcs of equipment including your heaters I had one stick open. Something is raising your temp, ya just have to figure it out.

Your UV heats up the water considerably as it does the 1 HP pump. Those 2 things would be the first things to address if it was me. Then, I would concentrate on all the other suggestions above. Also, 87F is blistering hot for just about anything.

That looks exactly like the ones I got from Carolina Supply a few years ago, only cheaper:thumbsup:
