I was just wandering around web sites and noticed they say 72~78* for fish and inverts. I was thinking the recommended temp used to say 78~82* about 2yrs ago when I started. My tanks usually stay around 78~79* and seem ok but I was wondering what others kept theirs at.

My tank stays between 79.4 at night and 79.9 during the day. With 500w of halides and 2 T5's and one 8in. fan blowing through canopy, temps are stable.

I have read the same about 72-78 but never actually read of a RC TOTM member that subscribed to that window of temps.

Celsius.

P.S. Stability in a reef tank is IMO far more important than the actual temperature (within reason).

Yeah I agree with that. I just thought 72~78* as recommended by LiveAquaria and Marine Depot Live sounded low to me. Was wondering what the general consensus was. Looks like 78~80* is what most people aim for.

From what I can read, the thinking about temp is coming around to the idea that corals can tolerate (and thrive) in temps far higher than was once thought. Corals being stationary cannot escape from the the intensity of the sun at low tide. Some are even exposed to the air above 90º for several hours. Dr. Shimek made some of these observations at the recent swap in Nashville. Fish on the other hand normally retreat to deeper water to escape the heat. My tanks normally max out @ 84º - 85º in the summer.
