im getting ready to drill my 75 its an old tank with 1/2" glass no center brace does anyone know if these tanks are tempered on all sides i dont want another explosion. Is there any way to tell if glass is tempered?

I use a couple polarizing camera filters, any photography store should have them. Sunglasses can work too but the tint makes it difficult sometimes. You'll need two lenses, or filters, one on each side of the glass. I get the best results outside in the sunlight with a clear sky as the background. Rotate the filters until most of the light is blocked, then move the pair of filters across the glass pane you want to check . If you see light and dark patterns, or splotches in the glass while looking through the filters it's tempered and cannot be drilled. You can try this on the side window in a car since they are all tempered to see the effect (only the side or rear windows, NOT the front).

You need to come further east.....It's always bright sunshine, light breezes, and warm in Highland Heights... even better in Chardon

Right gang?

chuggy, Personally I'd never drill one without checking, I don't like surprises....

Tempered glass is usually allot thinner than normal glass and even has a different sound when you tap on it. one reason for using tempered glass is the weight factor and the other is the clarity through the glass they can temper a thin piece of glass to be as strong as the thicker glass and keep the cost down on the tanks.
you usually always see tempered glass on the bottom of tanks because the need for clarity is not there. but strength and cost savings is. I would be more concerned if drilling for overflows in the bottom than drilling the sides , so with 1/2 inch glass I would say your very safe in drilling if it was tempered the thickness would be half of that .

The back roads were really slick in Findlay yesterday morning while I was there :)

In reality they suck today...:eek1: It's like an ice rink in front of the house and a young lady from down the street totaled her car and dented the pickup almost across the street from us...
