Temporarily leaving

Yes... I would ask him because it does not add up. Your $90 a month sounds about right. I am usually in Tier 4 (~$0.37) within 2 weeks of a billing cycle (Big house, pool, etc.) and when I was running metal halide on my 300g, the tank was costing me just over $100 per month in electricity. So what your landlord is suggesting make no sense.

BTW, I would be willing to take all your fish if you go down that route.

Yeah well I have an offer right now on everything but I'm seriously considering keeping it because even at tier 4 I should only be at about $128 a month and I'm willing to pay that to keep my reef running! Decisions decisions.

It's only 56 gallons with one light. I do run a 250w and a 150w heater though.

I doubt it hits 700 something is off. I'd the electricity shared between all tenants?

Yeah it's all shared. We live in a house and been running the heater and Christmas lights lol. Hopefully it was just that.

I just did the math and your $90 estimate seems to be spot on. I have a spreadsheet that tracks the usage and costs that I can send you if you are interested. Just PM me.

That would be great, thanks. Yeah I spent a couple hours figuring it out and even over exaggerated my wattages to give me the benefit of the doubt.

When you say "running the heater", is that a gas furnace or electric heat pump? Or are you talking about portable electric space heaters, which would be even more expensive?

Were your Xmas lights newer LED or old incandescent bulbs.

December and January will have a big jump in heating bills over the prior months, so most likely it was heating and Xmas lights as you say, plus more duty cycle on your tank heater (though relatively small).

There are only three tiers on PG&E E-1 rate now, but with it sounding like you have two households sharing one meter and bill, most of that usage in these months probably pushed into Tier 3, which is $0.40/month. You don't get the benefit of two baselines for Tiers 1 and 2 for two households.

Good news is heating costs start to drop rapidly after January.

I'm sorry that you have to face that choice. I love your taste in corals!

I don't have that kind of money available, but I do have another idea. If you'd like, I'd be happy to babysit your fish and corals for you, and a few months down the line when you're ready you can have them back!

I have been keeping saltwater reef tanks for 12 years, and I currently have a 29 gallon cube with LED lighting

Well there is four of us living in a 2000 square foot house. We were running LED Xmas lights and the heater is an old electric central heater and 3 of the four individuals run a space heater in their rooms at least through the night of not every time they are home.

Thanks for the offer but I think I'm going to keep it for at least the rest of the month. If it continues through February I'll consider selling everything again but for now I think I'll take my chances.

Those space heaters are horribly inefficient.

How long have you been there? Compare, say, Octobers electricity to December. Your fish tank will be fairly constant. Their space heaters will be the variable.

Depend on what kind of space heater and the wattage! It can skyrocket your electricity bill. It happens to me so I stop using space heater at our house

Yeah I did some comparisons and Sept-Oct were fairly low. Bill was about 150-200. In Nov-Dec went from 350-Nov to 750-Dec.
After talking to the roomies we concluded that we need to leave all space heaters off, run the heater at a lower temp, turn off all lights when not in use and replace some light bulbs in the house.
Hopefully this will greatly reduce our bill and I can keep the tank without the landlord tripping out on me.

Side note, anyone going to the silicon valley coral farmers market? I am so excited!
