Ten Gallon Start

Well, cleaner shrimp only do cleaning on fish, and thats rare so I wouldnt include him in the CUC. If i were you, I would go for a larger tank(20g), its not that more expensive and I am wishing I had larger. On a ten your really really limited to what you can have.

ya i'm w/henry on that...cleaner shrimp dont really clean the tank from what i've seen of them...they just clean up fish mostly, but like henry said...not terribly often.

However i strongly dissagree w/brian and strongly AGREE w/binary...water is not going to cycle a tank. The live rock is whats going to cycle your tank. The bacteria thats cycling the tank (which is always happening btw...just once the amonia and nitrite go to 0, they're just being converted to the next smallest thing before they can show up i believe) lives on any surface in there, mainly just the rock and sand. The water wont have any bacteria in it.

Again...water does not cycle...its the rock and sand thats cycling.

scott additives are things that u put in ur water that will benifit corals and they also need them to servive

Brian, corals dont need them. They use it to make corals color up, and it puts back trace elements that are normally found only in sea water (not in the home aquarium), unless you dose it of course. But they most definatly do not need them to survive. Most people use no additives at all, and all of the corals they have are thriving.

The reason I want with a cleaner shrimp is because he will help scavange the tank for left overs, and it your fish will appreciate the cleaner in the tank. My old cleaner used to clean my fish ALL the time after the lights when out. It is really neat to watch, so that another reason to get one.

Scott, let us know when you get everything sorted out. Make us a list, and we will evaluate it!

Suggestions????

That sounds perfect except the powerhead. If you HAVE to get one, get the smallest one you can find. Like I am talking 100gph at MOST.

I usually don't post on here but i thought i would throw in my two cents because I set up a tank very similar to yours 3 months ago. I think the powerhead is something you definately do need. I have an AC110 fuge and a maxijet 600 in my ten and i am considering adding another small powerhead to get a little more movement. I have a pair of clowns and some easier corals, softies, zoas, hammer and a small acan frag all of which seem to be doing fine.

You also might want to reconsider the purple firefish, from what i have read they are pretty peaceful and in a tank this small the clowns are going to make the entire tank their territory so they might beat it up. If you want some more life get a cleaner shrimp, they can be really entertaining.

add the purple firefish first the clowns should be fine with it, especially if you get small clowns. And i definately recommend getting small clowns. That way you dont run the risk of getting 2 females. When they're small they're still all males, and once one becomes "dominent" of the other, the dominent one will be the female. If you get 2 bigger random ones from the lfs, you dont know for sure if you got 2 males or 2 females or one of each. 2 females will usually fight.

Check in the octopus forum...theres one for octos, squid, and something else...i'm thinking the forum is soemthing like cephalopods? (cant spell nor say it lol)

Yes octopuses are in the Cephalopod forum. You can see my octo at www.tonmo.com It is an all Octopus and Cuttlefish forum. Very resourceful.

Aquatic Technology is a local store here in Ohio. But they are pretty big place and do have a website. Here is the link www.aquatictech.com
