Test Kits

Good question. I got mine for free at the Reefstock event, so I'm curious how much it will cost to replace it some day.

I looked them up on the web $29.99 for the kit $17.99 for a 3 pack of reagent. But question is are they available local?

Tyler - What are you looking to measure? When I was doing research on what Cal test kit to buy, Sera Test Kits were said to have to quite a range swing and not very specific, if I recall correctly. I have the Tetra Martin for Cal and I like it - in that I can actually read my levels easily now. I use Seachem for PH and Alk, I find those easy and accurate and they also have sample calabrating solutions. Salifert test kit for Cal sucks, don't recommend that one as the change from pink/blue to blue was difficult to read. my .02 cents.

Tyler - After using the SERA Alkalinity test kits for a month, I'm not so sure about it's accuracy. The last two weeks it indicated my alkalinity was dropping. When I tested this weekend (tested twice), the results said my dkH had dropped to 7. Since optimal is supposed to be 8 - 12, I increased my addition rate of akalinity additive (Part 1). Three days later, three of the Acros that I bought from Luis started bleaching. So I pulled out my two older Seachem test kits and got 5 mg/L with one of them and 6.5 mg/L with the other. Since I got three totally different results from three separate kits, I decided the stressed corals were a better indicator than a test kit. I resumed my previous addition rate of the Part 1 additive, but now I have three dead corals that a week ago were beautiful and thriving. Very aggravating!

Mark,

The same thing happened to me with the Salifert KH test kits. I was doing Zeovit at the time and I thought my dkH was 7. I bought a LaMotte test kit and it tested at a 5. I lucked out and caught it early. Only a few frags were affected. A few other people I know who were using the Salifert test kits weren't so lucky.

Let me know which corals you lost and I will replace them. If I don't have them in my frag tank, I can snip some for you.

Luis

Hey Luis - I lost two of my favorites. The deep water acro and the round, stubby very bright green acro. Also the thick branch acro with purple tips. The very bright green acro was doing so well, it is so disappointing that they can get so stressed with such a small change in water parameters.

Luis - Another question. Since I'm using the Zeovit, do you think the corals are more sensitive to water parameter changes?

Mark

Mark,

Those 3 acros are ready whenever you want to pick them up!

Using amino acids and Pohl's CV shouldn't have any effect on coral sensitivity.

By the way, I've been using Elos test kits and they are great. Very easy to use and have a NIST certification. The LaMotte KH test kit is very nice, but you have to do a little math calculation to get your results.

Luis

Luis - Where did you get the Elios kits? I don't trust the Salifert and Sera now.

Will you be around this weekend?

Mark

I got the Elos test kits directly from Elos a while back when they weren't readily available. Marine Depot stocks them now I believe.

Saturday looks good...I'll e-mail you later in the week.
