Testing...Everything? Nothing? Best kits?

I know that there are those who test everything and know exactly what thier water conditions are, but so far the only things I have tested in my tank are ammonia when first set up and my salinity. I have different orgs that let me know when something is off. I plan to begin testing my Ca, Alk, and probably Ph. What do you test? What do you test with? Why? Thanks for the help!

i also test Mg regularly, becaues it's critical to Alk and Ca levels. Ni and PO4 every once in a while. Go with Slaifert... they're more expensive, but definately worth it.

This is my order of importance.

SG
PH
Alk
Calcium
Ammonia
Nitrite
Nitrate
Phosphate
Magnesium

I use Saliferts for everything but PH. Digital Monitor is much better.

It's not as if I'm having any problems with anything in my tank... and I even have an anemone. Just figure better safe than sorry, so I'm wanting to start tweeking things to create as optimum environment as possible. Anyone else out there with testing advice? Thanks.
