Thanks Tomoko!

Mariner,
Can you tell me what kind of shop lite fixtures you have or where you got them?I have two already but they are 7in wide and there isn't room for three.

Thanks
Buzz

Looks great!! A nice job!!

I think Mariner has the fixtures without reflectors. You can paint inside of your canopy white or glue aluminum coated mylar on the wood to reflect as much light back into the aquarium. The tank looks clear, too.

buzzbait00 Looks great!! Stain ended up matching pretty good.

The0wn4g3.. Sorry to say you wont find a wood canopy anywhere.. The one above was one a I built for a 72 Gallon.. But you could build it the exact same way for a 46. Infact it would be eaiser cause the bend would be alot shorter. Its not to hard to do. If your going to paint it black Its Pretty easy.. You can use anykind of wood makes it easy to bend.. If your wanting to build one to stain its alot harder.. Well it depends on the wood.. I just built one out of oak for a 92 gallon corner tank.. Now it was a pain. I had to steam all the wood to get it to bend the way I wanted. Its a lil hard to explain exactly how to do it.. I'm sorry I dont' really have anymore pictures of the 72 to show.. At the time I built it I didn't take but a couple of pictures.. Here are a couple of the 92 maybe it will help a lil.. I ment to take more while I was building it but when I get working on stuff I tend to forget to stop to take pictures lol.. I need to remember I know I've had alot of help from looking at pictures of other peoples tanks..

LOL Thanks, Yeah the 92 since it was in a corner I couldn't really have the front flip up.. So I built it so I coul lift it above the tank.. Its got Heavy tracks on the back of it attached to the wall. There is a linear Actuator in the attic above the tank. You can't really see it but I installed a Toggle inside the stand right inside the door.. Flip the switch one way the canopy goes up to the ceiling flip it the other it goes back down to the tank.. Works great.. I like it so much I'm going to do something like it with my 180!

Well we have a "fishroom" now that has a 180, 60 gallon cube and a 35 Hex. Well long story short one of my Wife's poodles chewed my topoff water line up and soaked the carpet under the 180.. So I want to change the carpet in that room.. I decided to move all the tanks to another room since I had to move them anyway. The 92 is in the new room its going to replace the 60 gallon cube. So we will have a 180, 92 and the 35 hex in the new room. I'll have some frag tanks sumps ect but anyway I'm sure noone wants to read about all that without pictures of it lol.

Tomoko had said something about having a meeting here once I get around to getting it all done. You guys are welcome to come check it out if the club still wants me to host one.

Actually, the shoplights I use do have reflectors. I don't recall the brand names (I think I have two different kinds). But I know that shoplights come in various widths. The width of the reflectors should be printed on the outside of the box. I just looked around at Lowe's and/or Home Depot for the cheapest/narrowest I could find. The three sets that I have are crammed in my canopy pretty tightly (the reflectors touch each other on the edges), but they do fit.

8Ball,

How about hosting us in mid to late September or October?

Mariner - Sorry for the misinformation. I thought that you used the slim twin strip fixtures without the reflectors like some other people did.

Tomoko

Thanks Mariner,
I'll keep an eye open for the smaller fixtures.I only lack 3in.If I have to I'll use the dremel and cut some of the reflector off.I want to install one of them in the lid so when open I will have more room.Right now Im running two actinic and two 6500k.

I was thinking of going to Newby's place this weekend.I NEED LIVE ROCK,BAD!Can you give me that number agin?
Thanks!

Buzz,
I failed to say that I think your canopy turned out great, especially for a first effort. You're right about needing some more LR in there too!
Here's a pic of my stand and canopy from a couple Christmases ago - things have just gotten more crowded in there since then.

Very nice everybody. I built my canopy as well (attacted picture). I have T5s in there now but when I built it I just had one double NO from Lowes. I thought about putting 4 more NOs in there but after reading a lot online I went with T5s because of longer bulb life. Now seeing that others have NO it might of been okay if I stayed with it, but to late now. I have the 4 T5 tek retro kit with w/Icecap relfectors from ReefGeek.com for $300.

Tomoko!
I called John and told him that you had refered me and some others to his store. He said you were a very good customer. He was very helpful.I am going Sat. afternoon to get some live rock and have him look at a sample of my water.I hate to impose but I was telling my mom about your freshwater tank and she said she would love to see it.
I read were your hubby was going to Canada fishing. What part?I have been on a canoe/fishing trip from the boundary waters in Minn. to The Quatico in Canada.

Hi Buzz,

Your mother is welcome to come over and take a look at my planted tank. I can share some plants with her, if she finds some that she likes. I prune my plants like I frag my corals, but plants grow 100 times faster!

I suppose I am a good customer of John's. My house is only 5 minutes from his. The close proximity can be a mixed blessing ;)

As for where in Canada, I don't remember. I know he told me 100 times about it. He flies into St. Paul/Minneapolis to pick up his nephew and join his brother-in-law. They drive up to Canada from there. Once in Canada, they fly over some lakes and then drive some more on some dirt road to get to this remote area on a lake. They have a guide for three days and then they are on their own to get lost in the wilderness for 4 days (they have a nice cabin to stay in if they manage to find their way back...) I think my husband is considering taking a hand-held GPS this time :)
