Thanks Tomoko!

It was really good to see you, your girl friend and your mom.

The small branchy piece you are talking about looks like a finger leather frag. A type of sinularia. It looks like it is coming along well. It was sulking earlier when I cut it, pulled in all the polyps and looking grey instead of its usual peach color. As compared to an acropora, it should feel less rigid but not hard as a rock.

It looks like you still have some phytoplankton. With more rocks (an increased filtering capacity), I believe your tank will clear up. I add about 1 to 2 cups of phytoplankton to my tank daily to feed my filter feeders such as feather dusters and crocea clams and, as you noticed, the water is crystal clear. We generally use 1 to 2 lbs per gallon as a rule of thumb. So you need about 75 lbs of rocks. I added some lace rocks and base rocks, too, to keep the cost down. The most LFS's give you a better deal when you buy a large quantity, too. Some people use some live edible clams from places like Publix to let them do extra filtering.

Mrs. Wages pickling lime is a great stuff. Here is a good article by Dr. Randy Holmes-Farley about using pickling lime:

What Your Grandmother Never Told You About Lime

Curtis,

It was really nice meeting you and your family. Sorry about such a short notice, but I thought you might want to meet other reefers in the area. Did you get to go to John Newby's shop, too?

I did not get to see your baby girl well because of all the things going around me (Reilly was very happy to find your cute little daughter.) We can get together another time to talk about Japanese culture and the language instead of reefing, if you'd like.

Tomoko

Tomoko, I would love that. There is so much I don't know about Japan that I would like. Thank you again and you too have a very nice family.

Oh yes, I did get over to John's. Great place and very clean, that along with selection and distance is why I am going to start giving my business there. I got a Frog Spawn Coral there yesterday, It is doing great. How long do you think before it starts to grab hold of some rock and become latched on? Right now I just have it wedged inbetween two rocks right now.

Frog Spawn is a hard coral. It does not grow like softies. It will not grab hold of rocks. You need to support it by wedging it between rocks or glue its hard base to other rocks using two part epoxy like Aqua Mend or gel type super glue.

Tomoko

Thank Tomoko. I have it wedged in there now so I'll just leave it and see. If it looks like it is going to move with the curren then I'll get some of the underwater glue then. Thanks.

Tomoko,
Thanks for the article on Pickel lime I enjoyed it.Can you tell me some different things to use for base rock and were to get them?I now have 30lb of what they called coral base rock at The Aquarium Shop and 17lb pounds or feji live rock.
I will unfortunitly be driving back from Destin on 8/5/06 and cant make it to the frag swap.
Thanks,
Buzz!

Hey Sean, I have some Lava base in mine. I got some of it from Aquarium shop but most of it from TN. It adds a lot of color to my tank until CA starts to grow on it. It is very light for the size pieces you get so it costs less and it has a TON of holes for great bacterial growth. I don't use to much of it though just in case of leaching but all of my stuff is reef safe.

Some people say that Lava rocks are high in phosphate, but I am not sure since I never used one.

I recall some people here used some reef bones with good results. Ebay seems to have some dealers selling reef bones inexpensively. I thought either That Fish Place or Drs. Foster and Smith listed reef bones and other similar live rock alternatives.

I've finished the canopy for now.Mariner,I found the fixtures at lowes.I mounted one of them in the lid so all three fit easy and I have more room in front.Works great!Im still playing with different bulbs though.I now have three marine glow actinic's and three 6500's.Looks ok but a little washed.Any ideas?I still hope to switch to MH when funds permit.
Thanks guys!
