The 120g Cube build

Here Fishy Fishy
Hello all, it's been a long, long time since I've started a thread here. I thought about starting a new account, to leave the memories of this one behind, but I'm just too lazy to do so. So here's a quick primer on me... I've been in the hobby for a very long time, some of you have even talked to me when I was employed at a rather well known (and sponsor) e-tailor. After a much needed 5 year break from the hobby, I'm back. I was never a big fan of the forums back in the day, mostly because I got enough "fish talk" at work… but now I see that these forums are a wealth of information, and I'm having a lot of fun catching up on what I've been missing for the past 5 years.

So why did I get out, and why did I get back in? I left the fish business to work for the government…. I know… say what you want, I've learned to accept it. With the federal job, came the move out of California.. I've now been to 3 states with this job… all while trying to move up the food chain. During that time I got married, and took on far too many expensive hobbies (think, Ironmans, Triathlons… on top of the waterskiing and snow skiing that I already was hooked on.) I really had zero desire to get back into the reef hobby…. until I bought my place out in Park City… There, in the back of the laundry room sat my DREAM tank… 32x36x24 (~120 gallons.) It was old, it was dusty, it had some "custom" modifications to the overflow… it was PERFECT for what I loved to do…. MODIFY THINGS!! But, unlike back in the day… I was married now… I had to "get approval" from the wife… Which basically meant (Me)"I'm starting another reef tank" (wife) "Then I get a new pair of skis" (Me) "Get dressed, we're going to Cole Sport!"
$900 later… she got her skis, and I had approval for a new tank.

LET THE BUILD BEGIN!!

The tank had no stand.. so quickly I "threw something together" to get the tank elevated so I could see what I was working with. I think I'll keep the base as it turned out better than I had hoped. Now I'll start working on the "skinning" process. The basement in our house is "Ski Chalet" themed… so there is a lot of pine wainscoting, I will continue this theme onto the stand.

The tank itself needs a bit of work, the overflow has a few "extra" holes drilled in it that I just don't need. Looks like the guy before me tried to use the bottom holes as some form of detritus removal system… well, it broke off, and now it's useless. The plan is to remove the overflow and build a new one.

Here's a couple "first look" photos….

The Game Plan

- Remove and replace overflow. I may try to repair what is already there.. but that's not my plan so far
- Paint the back of the tank black
- Build a canopy
- Skin the stand
- Find a sump of some form.
- Setup the RO/DI and mixing station.
- Return is going to be a Mag 9.5 into a SeaSwirl (Thanks emelton)
- 2 Vortech MP40w's with battery backup (Thanks apuhl20 for 1 of them)
- Lighting will be provided by 400w Hamilton 20k in a Hamilton Reflector
- Skimmer is a Euro-Reef CS8 with gate valve mod
- I've got a couple Phosban reactors laying around that I'll add for GFO and Carbon
- Controller is still being debated
- I am reviving my geo reef 612 calcium reactor
- Dosing will be done with a Litermeter 3
- Fuge needs to be under the stand… Working on a design…

Still working out other details….

Hmmm, had an extra 29 gallon laying around…. it fits the Euro-reef… I was hoping for a bigger sump, but this works for now…. until I change my mind again.

And I am following because you are a federal employee - We can and really do great things all the time regardless of what some may mistakenly believe.:p

Looking forward to this! I'm planning a 150DD that I'll start later this year and I've been having difficulty planning the sump/fuge and equipment under the stand.

Well, it's been a few days… lots has happened. More specifically, 3-4 feet of new powder… So I've been pretty busy snorkeling in the hills.
As far as the tank is concerned… Huge order got placed with my favorite supplier. Next week is going to get crazy. I got the manifold all plumbed today. Still waiting to cut the acrylic for the sump… that might happen tonight, if not, tomorrow…
I ripped out the old overflow. It was unrepairable from the extra holes that were drilled in it.
Here's an update on the stand. Again, the basement room is "ski chalet" themed… so the pine really matches everything. The canopy is not done yet, it's sorta done, but I'm not happy with the way things are looking.

More details to come… I'm off to sit in the hot tub, my legs are sore from this week.

Look good, and I'm jealous of the pow :). Here in Michigan, there is not really any powder skiing. And I broke my leg:)so I can't ski :(

New stuff has arrived!! Let the build continue!

BRS had a great deal going on their RODI systems, so I finally replaced the old unit that I had.

Also got around to building the overflow box and installing that.

Manifold is built. It's odd building in such a small space, but I should be able to cram everything under there.

Sump built

Skimmer placed in, still not setup, just a test fit

Also go the DA ReefKeeper lite with the PH probe on. This will really only be responsible for the lighting and the CA reactor along with heating. Everything that will be on full time will get plugged into a power center that is hidden in the stand.

Electrical wise, I ran 2 new 20amp circuits from the breaker box into the plug behind the tank. Top plug handles the Reefkeeper, bottom plug handles the Power center. I also plumbed a new drain line from the tank to the existing bathroom drain which is right on the other side of the wall.

Next up is to finish the canopy, wait another 24 hours for the silicone to cure (48 hours, it's been 24) and then start the drip of RODI into the tank. Once that's filling, I'll install the return pump, setup the skimmer, install the heater (still in transit along with the salt,) finish up some plumbing, and then turn on the pump.

lol measure the glass a little off? I did the same thing in my sump and still just siliconed them in as you did at an angle.

I wanted more bubble trap in less space. Decided to use .25 acrylic instead of the thin glass, and made more room for the skimmer.

Larger sump just isn't possible there. I tried all options under there, including having one built. We will see how long this tank stays here, the wife is already trying to get me to upgrade it to a built in behind our basement bar. There is a 20x30 laundry room behind it, that we are considering changing to a fish room.... but.... that's at least another year or two off, and that's assuming we don't move into a different neighborhood.... which is VERY possible.... so for now, a 30 gallon sump is going to have to do. Not a biggie. There will be a 10 gallon fuge added under there here soon, along with the calcium reactor and co2 tank. In the laundry room, there is a frag setup getting ready to go. That will be a build thread for another date.

For now, updates...

Sump has been re-made

Canopy is somewhat done... still need a stain on the whole stand and canopy, and need to make the final adjustments to align the completely removable sides... sorry for the crap photo.
