The 125 build

Well I should be getting my 125 in a few weeks now I have to figure out what lights to use?? I was thinking of T-5's I have heard that if you use them you will not have to get MH's?? If I got a IC 660 how many t-5's can I run on them? Tank is 6' long. I am also thinking of getting rid of my rock and a bunch of corals because of the dictoyta I have in my tank now. I have soaked them in murinc acid and the stuff came back. I think it is on some of my zoo's I have so they might have to take and go bye bye.

Don't kill your corals dude, I'll relieve you of them. Algae doesn't scare me, not with my Superman Skimmer!!

As far as lighting, what do you plan to keep?? SPS, LPS, softies/mushies??? FOWLR?? Clams?? IME, MH are the best way to go. I can give you references of people who started with T5"s and went to MH. I will only go to T5's when they officially stop making my beloved T12's. I would recommend 3 x 250w MH (XM 10k's) supplemented by actinics of your choice. If you are sold on T5's, I can't really help you there as I have no experience, but again, can point you in the correct direction.

I have a 8x54w T5 fixture on my 75 gallon and LOVE it. The only thing my SPS need now is more flow. Honestly, I am getting just as much color out of my SPS (Bali tri Color, ORA Miami Orchid, Micropthalma, Pokerstars Monti) than those I got them from and they were using MH. I also LOVE the fact that I don't have to spend more $$$$ on a chiller becasue of the heat the MH put off.

IMO, T5's, hands down, are a better way to go

One other thing. Some if the people who switched to MH did so because MH are the only ones that give that "shimmer effect", if you know what I mean.

Yes, my T5's def. don't have the shimmer effect, but I have never had it, so I don't know what I am missing :)

James I might have to bring the corals that are causing the problem up to you and have Mr. I mean Dr. James fix them up and when I get the 125 up we can frag some off for the fixing????

If I get the one I am thinking of I will have to drill it so we might have to have a 2nd meeting in Dec. so some if the people that want to see how to drill could come and watch.

I am thinking of taking my tank down maybe this weekend, I have got a tank I can put the corals in for a week to 3 till I can get the 125.

I am worried that if I do get MH that I will need a chiller even if I do put fans in the canopy. What I was thinking if I went with MH is just 2 250w with 2 VHO's actinic.
I just don't know what to do???
Maybe I will put a post on the main forum and see what kind of resopnse I get.

I'll take care of them for you and frag back when you are up and running again, if that is what you are suggesting.

Two meetings in Dec. could be too many. I have some diamond drill bits and a 20H we can drill if you want to lead the demo.

Personally I'd go for the MH, but I think you will do fine with the T5's. But if something goes wrong (or right), don't blame me.

If you take down your tank this weekend, I MAY be driving through on my way to Duluth. I'll tell ya why, just not here.

EDIT: Oh and post a pic of the problem corals and state what the problem is if you could please??

Ya I will bring them to the meeting and you can be the dr. and when I get the 125 up I will get some frags there is only a couple that I need to "clean up"

I maybe getting a tank now that is already drilled so that would be one less step I would have to do.
Ya that would be ok to do if anyone would want to see a demo on drilling I have no fears of it.

Shot me a PM on the details of the Duluth trip. I am not sure if I will or not just kind of getting ready. The girl that is buying my tank said it would be the 7th before she would come and get it so maybe I will wait till that week just so don't have to worry to much.

you are gonna be tearing it down soon, I'm saving money to give to you on next Thursday or Friday or Saturday, whichever works for you...

And you can always throw in whatever you want with the tank, its going to be turned in a low-flow sps/ric tank, and I can cook any rocks that you want to just chuck out the window.

tear down

tear down

Yes I think I am going to start to tear it down over the weekend and some during the week.I will be home on Friday night so that will work for me.

I am going to take my rock out and soak it in murnic acid to kill everything off I only have a few pieces of "live rock" I bought down at OD in savage a few months ago. I am going to need a bunch of new stuff to fill up the 125 so if anyone has some to spare LMK

Did any of you notice that there's a meeting at Ocean Devotion next Saturday in the cities? Wish I could take a trip down but I don't think the timing is good for me. It's nice that it's on a Saturday. Might be a good way to pick up some of the stuff you need for the build?!

Sorry, wish I had rock to spare. I would possibly like more for my new setup myself. I just threw algae infested rock out in the cold for a few weeks and tossed it back in the tank. Do you forsee any problems? It still has some of that nasty red hair stuff but it's nearly impossible to pull that stuff off. It's all dead and bleached out but the fibers are still there. Maybe when I get some clean up crew they'll take care of it?

Only a few weeks off from our meeting! Wish I was closer to Duluth too. I'd love to check out a 300g setup!! Post pics!!

If you are looking for nice rock at awesome prices, give Scott a call at All Aquatic Pets - 763-856-0644. He is currently getting ready to move his store from his home to a retail location and would probably give you a decent price on some rock. When I was there a week ago, he had a few 90 gallons PACKED with awesome looking Tonga rock. He is locate din Zimmerman and will ship. Or if you are coming down for the OD meeting, you could always swing by on the way to or from.

Give him a call, he is a great guy and has awesome prices on everything livestock related.
