The 210 build begins

Looks like a sweet setup a_thrice! Even the sump gets an electonircally controlled Tunze. Have you decided on a skimmer?

Jimbo - Can't wait to hear how you like the SCH if you go that route.

A_Thrice with your stand so TIGHT! Wont you join our chat tomorrow night?

We have a billion questions I'm sure! This is hands down the coolest stand build I have ever seen, thanks for sharing it with us all.

Ok I'll bite. What would you do differently? The only reason I care is because I'm having a stand built in a few weeks as well and would like to hear any ideas.

Totally up to the owner, but as he said he's not done
But I wouldn't have used 2x4's, I would add 2x4's for the vertical bracing instead of 3/4 poplar (at least that's what it looks to me)
Wouldn't use the galvinized fastners as they will rust eventually even under a coat of paint.
I wouldn't have laid the 2x4's flat on the bottom (very little strenght this way) instead would have used 3/4 ply under the whole area to distribute the area evenly.
I would also add a crossbrace at say 45 to provide the tnak from leaning or the frame from racking. I didn't do this with mine but mine is attached to a wall and if it pulls away from that I've got bigger problems.

As for the woodworking looks good, I'm assuming he's going to paint the wood, if that was the case I wouldn't have used the poplar but maybe pine, good choice on the poplar though as it will hold up better.

That's it for now ;)

Like I said I don't mean to bash the guy, but that's an incredible amount of water to go surfing through the living room at 3:00 AM
Just offering encouragement not critizing, but it might seem that way, sorry if it does A_Thrice

Ok I'm going to weigh in here.

First A_Thrice. AWESOME BUILD!

radone, I would probably agree with not using the horizontal 2x4's for the top rails. Without a center brace anything over about 4' is a stretch without bracing. However, with the door location he may be planning on vertical bracing at each door which would eliminate any worry.

As for the strong-tie fasteners, yea they may rust but as you said this will be over time. By the time the stand is complete and all things are tied in together they will be little help by then. All the other members will be mail

As for the 2x4's on the bottom frame. The ones that will handle the vertical loads transfered to the bottom are not flat, only the ones used to tie the front and back. I would assume he will be placing a piece of P/W on these to create a bottom to place all that nice equipment on. The cross brace on the end is probably a good idea and I think I may run outside and add them to mine as we speak.

All of these comments are just my opinion

Me too. Only reason is I sell oceanic tanks that have a 15yr warranty if used w/ their stands which aren't made half as solid as this one looks. I agree on the metal braces, they need to be painted to prevent rust but everything else looks very solid imo.

This is becoming a most useful thread indeed. Great to hear from others on this matter. I will be utilizing anything remotely important in my design as well, so most appreciative.

OOPS just re-read my post again and realized I got lost in the middle of thought and didn't finish the sentence what I was trying to say there was that by the time all the pieces are glues and nailed together the stand will be plenty strong so the strong-tie brackets are really just to make thrice feel better.

Hey now my 9 year old Oceanic stand resembles that remark :D

Dave builds things for a living and says it looks fine to him. IIRC he also said the wood skin provides your cross bracing.
We both like the way you're building the doors.

Easy killer.....I wasn't bashing in any way:D Just saying that they design/build and sell tanks for a living and have a great rep and their stands hold the weight for the long run. Knock on wood, I have never seen a wood stand from allglass/aqueon or oceanic fail that press wood crap is another story.
