it doesn't take much ms 222. i use 3 grams in 5 gallons to anesthetize koi to work on them. double that amount is what i use for killing. leave the fish in the water for an hour.

even after cutting a koi's head off the heart will beat for up to an hour out of the water.

I used to work for a marine biologist for several years, he used to use ice to put fish to sleep for surgery. We always just took anything that had to be put down and put it in the freezer overnight. They just fall asleep and never wake up.

Small fish sick->serpent star in search mode-> target located-> TERMINATED.

For bigger ones, place in a fish bowl with water. Add a bit of Co2 from my storage tank at the rate of 20 bpm, cover bowl. Fish terminated in 15 minutes. Only had to do it once but worked.

MS222 is great, a little goes along way. It is the research/academic standard. Rotenone is used to kill fish en masse, ponds and whatnot, but is extremely hazardous to just about eveything. In a pinch you can use baking soda to flood a small amount of water with CO2 = instant suffocation. Works great in the field due to being cheap, easy to get, and non-toxic.

Hmmmm I read all the posts and Im all for putting something out of its misery quick. Look take the fish smash its entire body in one blow and its over. End of story no pain, no suffering instant death in less than one second what more could a fish or human ask for. Sorry to be so blunt but hey thats the way it is. If I can go out in one second compared to how some do I will be happy.

How is it so easy to put a snook or redfish down quickly but so gut wrenching to put down a fish from one of my tanks?
Dinner vs a pet is very different...

Off w/ the head, fillet, beer(s) and batter and into the pan :D

If your worried the off w/ the head may not be instant enough, hold it by the tail and flick its head as hard as you can, used to work on my sisters gold fish.

I had to put down an angel that's scales had fallen off and left a hole in his side (still to this day I have no clue what that was all about).

Anyway, being a medical guy who has dissected human bodies, I chose to put a knife into its brain stem causing instant and pain free death. Simple, clean, and ethical.

yes do not do the alka seltzer it does not always work and the fish sometimes is still alive after the treatment

If anyone uses MS222 please wear gloves and make sure not to touch your face especially your nose or mouth. This works very well.

If anyone uses clove oil just a note: Not all fish will go under using it. Some show little reactions to it so if you are trying to be humane it may do little good.

The holy hand grenade? Also known to work on sloths, anteaters, bats, breakfast cereals, orangutans, and lambs.

First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin, then shalt thou count to three, no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceedest on to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who being naughty in my sight, shall snuff it!

Almost forgot, it also works on Vorpal Bunnies.

How can hammer not be the best ?

it takes a split second.

bam on the head and its no more.

It's because they don't really want to pony up to the fact that they are killing something.

IMO, the fastest method possible is best for the animal. If you are going to do the deed then own up to it and do it fast. All of this anesthetic crap is just a way for you to try and not feel guilty about doing it.

I've never had to do it; I have a 15 year old dog that is really starting to slow down; cannot walk up the stairs, having accidents in the house, etc......its just hard to think about! Fish, dogs, cats, whatever it is...this is never easy. I personally think anything quick is the best...but the hammer sounds a little scary for me....not sure if I could man up to it....
