what is the best way for future reference because i almost had to but the fish came back to its normal self. i heard a quick out of the water than cutting behind the head right where the spinal cord starts

well, i've heard to put it in water and then put it in the freezer, the temp of the water will lower....eventually low enough where the fish falls asleep and dies.

I've heard some say that if you're going to go the freezer route, you should have a cup of water that is so cold it is almost frozen already- put the fish in then in the freezer. It's supposed to shock the fish quickly, which is better than slowly freezing in water that starts out tank temperature.

Or so I've heard. Thankfully I've never had to euthanize a fish.

Freezing is very inhumane. As nasty as it may sound, severing the spine, just behind the head, with a sharp knife is the quickest and most humane, other than using anesthetics, which aren't very readily available.

The only reason that I'm against the sharp knife method is that fish operate on very low blood pressure. What that means is that a fish's brain can continue working for some time in the absence of the rest of it's body.

I don't know if you've ever seen those videos of pirahnas in the Amazon, but they can basically consume all of a fish's body, leave the head and it will continue breathing for several minutes. Granted, that's not the singular traumatic shock that a knife blow would be; I just wouldn't trust it to be as humane as people say in every case.

One of the best ways to euthanize many animals is by taking a bucket with dry ice in the bottom and placing the animal on an elevated platform of some kind (don't put them directly on the dry ice, it burns). Cover the bucket, the ice will sublime and fill the bucket with CO2 and put it to sleep. Sad task, but it works.

an overdose of fish anathesia, ms222 is best. second best is clove oil as anesthetic overdose. cheap at any health food store.

Im sorry to laugh but that was funny! And painless really for the fish! 2 thumbs up, blown up.

You could have a firework display and have the fish go out in style! :eek2:

Is clove oil a danger to humans or other animals?

It's like anything else, dose dependant. Could you consume enough to do harm? probably eventually. People smoke clove cigarettes for the mild numbing effect in has on their mouth. If it is legal to smoke I would think you would have to consume a lot of it to do harm. I would tend to think with clove oil you may still want to do a coup de grace but know that if you are clumsy the fish will not feel anything.

put a couple capfuls in a liter of water. leave the fish in there for 30 minutes and it is dead.

i have done this with koi. also as an anesthetic while scraping and scoping a sick fish, treating a sick fish for an external wound.

Seriously..just throw it in the garbage disposal. No mess, no pain, no waiting in a strange bowl for 20 minutes for the poison to kick in.

technically it is not poison but anesthesia.

are you from the Jeffery Dalmer school of euthanasia? is that how you would want to go over an anesthetic?

Carl

Fish in small container, add Alka seltzer. The CO2 should put the fish down easily and humanely. Freezing is no longer thought to be a good way to put fish down.
