"The Cavernous Reef" - A 180G Build

They prefer darker lighting IMO. And flow is more of a cyano risk factor than lighting.

Well that's one thing I can feel good about. Flow is excellent, imo, which should help with my new additions... Acros!! Anyone help me ID these (3 on top) so I know what exactly I have.

Was, still am, very hesitant about adding them this early, but my teal pocci and war favia are doing so well, may as well try some cheaper acros as I begin my vinegar dosing program. Big sigh...chemistry, this is the big leagues for me.

This is a Poccillopora, right?

War favia...man colour sucks on these photos. I use Photoshop at work nearly all day and can't get myself to use it on these photos. It'll feel too much like work.

Got these 3 as well.

Sun Coral update

Sun Coral update

I've got them trained to open up during peak photo periods now. Hard work, sleepless nights but all worth it.

But I digress... can't forget this 'little', comparatively speaking, Orange Finger gorg. At 9" tall it should colour up the corners nicely...wonder if this is an NPS.

20130727_224652

yes both are NPS. or more correctly Azoox :)

they have rather large polyps, so much easier to feed them. mine are growing fine, I feed them mix of Fauna marine Min F, Seafan, and [oyster shrimp salmon, clam] mix that I make into a puree.

Oyster, and Fauna marine stuff gets them opened within minutes.

about algae and cyano ... if you have good flow, it would wipe it clean.

about the tube anemones, make sure to not feed them too much, or too little. you have to find the sweet spot for feeding them. when they are getting fed enough, they close down during the day and open in after noon and are fully expanded at night. if open all the time, its getting too little or too much food. usually I feed mine once a week, and it gets what sun corals miss other days.

i think I see a chilli coral in there too ... if not opening, place it in more direct flow, and try target feeding it. I have found that mixing food with Phytoplankton would also help them open up ... cant find correlation on why, as they dont seem to consume the phyto.

just some experience I gained last couple of years trying to keep these Azoox guys .

I'm soaking it all in Allmost! I've been lucky so far that my Azoox are not shy letting all their polyps hang loose. This one I picked up today even shows off it's blue polyps outside the water when I was trimming off it's dead tips.

And this Coral Frenzy seems to be well liked...but I really have no way of knowing for sure though.

What do you think, time for another video update? Here it is...

the lighting needs to be more direct. But seek out Bud Carlson (Floyd) he might be the national AS expert!

Yes, I've subscribed to his thread and I think he might like the light that I've chosen for my ATS with only reds and blues which are proven plant (algae) producers. Thx me Lord!

amazing execution on this concept! It looks perfect! So cool!

Hey, I appreciate that cdouble. I admit I am pretty pleased with the results so far and more importantly, the inhabitants are looking really healthy so thanks, hope you stick around for the ride.

..but 'perfect'? Well, time will tell.

Hey check out my LED Cavern lighting with 6X 4W Royal Blues.

Cool movie. I really would like to get a better idea of the total layout in a FTS, though.

Your caves are coming on nicely. It's too bad you can't have coralline algae growth there. How about some brightly-coloured encrusting sponges?

Man this is looking great... What a cool and unique concept. Love our build! Would love to see this mature into TOTM

More and more I am loving the cave and that lighting you created is really setting it off.

Thanks guys, the fish loves all the cool hiding places and it's fun to watch the big play with the small. I've been adding more 'nano' fish than I ever planned in the beginning. I think a small collection of dottybacks, grammas, basslets and yes, damsels, are in the works...love, LOVE their jewel tones.

And as for TOTM, you flatter me, but I'll respectfully dismiss any TOTM talks right now reeftanknewbie. I can only dream!! But you'll get the first glass of beer when that ever (never) happens. :bounce3::bounce3::lol:

Thanks Dave but the cavern is looking a little bland compared to the bonsai garden (that's what I like to call it :) side. But I'm hoping to score some sponges and other nps species soon. What I do want to find is the following:

encrusting gorg, esp if they're this bright!

Sea plumes, which I've already sourced out some purple ones.

And high up on top of my wish list are sea sponges, likes these.

...and here are the fts... meh, too blue. Note, the blue shadowbox backdrop is not turned on (not finished to be more precise).

Closer up, LEDS set to white and photo corrected.

Hey thanks Dave, I'm really happy how it's coming along as far stocking is concerned although I've somewhat veered from the original plan of keeping only 3 or 4 acros and I have 9 now. This means I can't keep as many euphylias as I wanted...out of room already snd i still don't have a zoa/acan garden yet. The stocking of this tank must draw to a close soon.

BTW, I would stay away from most sponges. I kept a tube sponge and it ended up dying and killing half my fish. Many are toxic and you'll never know until they die.
