The CVRC Coral Chain (How to get a free rare coral frag in your tank)

This is one of the new changes you will be seeing implemented this year, this one you are going to like a lot.

My dream coral in the beginning was a Purple People Eater, in those days it was about $300 a polyp. Finally after a long while I found one but man did I pay for it. To me it was worth it, but everyone deserves the right to own at least one centerpiece coral that he or she can really be proud of. Most new reef keepers wont put $100 into a tiny frag because they are afraid they will kill it, I don't blame them it is scary. But what if I told you there was a way to get your very own Limited Edition coral 100% free.
<h2>
What if you could get, Oh I don't know, say a "Purple Monster" frag for free? Impossible you say? No, not really we have figured out a way to put at least one rare coral into every members tank eventually and for the low low price of FREE. HOW?</h2>

Ladies and Gentlemen I give you....

<b>"The CVRC Coral Chain"</b>

The Basic Rules:

The frag(s) will be something rare ie (valuable) not common. Once the frag arrives it will be split into, one frag sent to Jim the other stays here with me. First priority is to the survival of the coral, if either of us loose it we will simply wait till the frag is big enough, frag it again and start over. If we both loose it, we simply start over from scratch no one will be responsible for the loss monetarily or otherwise.

After both pieces are "big and healthy enough to frag" Amy will bring the one from KY and I will bring the one from here to the fragging table at one of our swaps. By this time a select group of 5 individuals picked based on "trust, loyalty to the hobby, experience with said coral species, etc/all will receive the first initial cuts.

An announcement will be posted on our local forum not on RC, in a special room that will require members to sign in. You may sign up for the program here. You will have to prove your identity there as well as the meeting when you pick the frag up. You will find several coral from this program to choose from, choose whichever you have the most knowledge about keeping.

You will monitor the frags growth and report back the status on the thread, pics will be nice. You will grow out the coral to a fragable size. When the coral is ready you will bring it to the swap/meeting where it will be divided and passed on freely to the next member on the registered waiting list. After you pass it on we ask that you share your particular knowledge you have learned about this coral with that next individual, in other words you will teach them what you have learned about it and they will do the same exact thing when they frag it.

By recording the progress and teaching each member what you have learned first hand or observed about this coral you will be contributing to a valuable growing data base of coral husbandry techniques that may allow someone who has never thought of keeping "that"particular coral the ability to do so.

With the new CVRC ID cards we will be able to track the whereabouts of any of these frags at any given time. IF ANYONE TRIES TO SELL OR BUY A FRAG of this coral before passing it on at least once, his/her ID card and account will be terminated and he/she will no longer be eligible for group buys, giveaways, or special sales etc/all.

Any member who looses the frag entirely will be required to notify the moderator of the forum of the loss. He she will not be held liable in any way or form. If he/she looses a frag they may request to be placed back on the list. Failure with a frag will also result in valuable data to help others eventually learn the techniques needed for said frag.

Any member on the waiting list in violation of any group TOS will be removed and loose his/her ID and group privileges.

<b>
Any questions?
</b>

FOLLOW THIS THREAD TO BE NOTIFIED OF WHEN WE GO LOVE WITH THIS and open the waiting list.
Also think about the waiting list, if you are not 100% certain of your ability to keep a particular frag maybe you should wait a bit until more husbandry data will be available for that piece. In other words lower on the list may be a good thing for some :thumbsup:

Awesome. Truly awesome. This just could work with this group, as we are pretty much honest people.

Very good, Ron. I like it alot. We could really bump this up with my frag pot idea too. We could be getting a club coral every month, coral trading everywhere, frags falling from the sky! Cats and dogs loving each other! Worldwide peace! .....oh... ahem excuse me. getting a bit carried away, anyway it really is a great idea. Let me know what I can do to help........

We will be having quite a few of these frags out there. The more money we earn the more corals we put in members hands.

A side note to the rules above:

You will only be elligible for one Chain Coral at a time guys. After you complete your turn with one frag you may sign up for another. This gives everyone a chance.

Also a good idea. Dunno if you read my fragpot idea in its entirety on the other thread it seems more appropriate here so I shall copy/paste and apologize for any reduntancy:
I think it would be great if we could have a fragpot(in lew of dues or additional to). Everone throws in 10 bucks or so till we get enough cash to order something nice(appleberry monty anyone?) Then auction it off at a swap to the fragpot participants. As everyone already pitched in a little for the coral to begin with, as it grew we part it out amongst the people that paid into the pot. It may seem a bit weird paying for it twice but the money would revolve back into the fragpot, we would get something again, and so on. After a while, we all could be raising up CVRC frags in our tanks for each other, and as long as the interest continues the money would grow in the pot, as long as the fragpot dues stay the same and no one orders some 400.00 acan with it later on; in other words keep the price of the frag to a nominal amount.

Fragpot could not be "Auctioned" but would work if names were drawn etc. The Chain gives a much better result and more people will get the frag(s) without paying for it directly. The frags are bought with money raised from the members buying tickets this is just a way to give back something to them for there donation.

When the project goes live we will have several choices for the first "Chain coral" you may vote on which ever and we will buy the one with the most "confirmed votes"

I would humbly suggest that we try to get some corals with decent growth rates, at least in the beginning, and like we talked about in the real world Ron throw in a softy or LPS too. Lets not forget to mention that.

I've been looking at WV law on Auctions and in the case of something like this if it was done in the form of a "silent auction" where the bids were submitted in sealed envelopes it's not considered an auction. 46-2-328 of the wv state code makes it pretty clear an auctioneer accepting bids in an open forum makes it an auction. If the bids aren't public it's not one. I may not have found the section yet that classifies that as an auction but I'm a looking. However if that is considered an auction then isn't the state is violating that every time they bid a contract out or any other company that bids contracts? Something to consider. I know the company I work for didn't have an auctioneer when we were accepting bids for our services at our locations.

I think doing that on a small scale would be good idea. Around 5-10 frags. put them in the tank and set a minimum price. Wouldn't be much different than another drawing.

Seems we tried this once before too but no one would man the table where the corals were, no one saw them and so no one bid on them, we raised $0 on that round.

Still a good Idea IMO

Can I get on the list for the purple monster as well? I think it would look great with my red devil and giant gourami.

Looks like we are getting some good ideas/plans and are trying to move forward and I like that. I think we are moving in the right direction.

Actually, the Big Green, (nonprofit organization for athletic scholarships at Marshall), does a silent bid auction that does not require sealed envelopes. You basically have a clipboard at each item and people come by, bid against each other in the form of written bids, when the bidding comes to an end, the highest one wins! Still exciting, still have the auction feel.. and it is still limited by time..

Yeah I though in that direction too however that makes the bids publicly viewable and is a little to close to an auction and could be seen as one where the "hidden bids" wouldn't be.

Yes but if they can do it than we should also be able to do it.
