The Fattening of A.Achilles

Hi guys,

Have had my Achilles for approx 3-4 months now. After a 4-6 week QT introduced him to my display and want to get him up my "Fat tang" standards.

All of my other tangs are easily an inch wide whereas the Achilles is not.

What foods would encourage the tang to put on weight?

I currently feed a DIY mix that includes prawns (Shrimp), mussell, fish, squid, nori, garlic.

Would appreciate anybodies feedback.

Does he eat any dry food? IME pellets are a GREAT way to fatten up tangs.

los and lots of nori

IME this gives them a big belly, but I have not found it to help add weight to a thin tang. I'm not saying don't use it, but just keeping it fat on nori won't actually get the fat reserves up. Again, JME.

That is true but the big belly is more bloat than true weight. Pellets and other fully nutritious food would be better.

How big is your Achille? Have you try Flake food? Mine loves all kinds of food and loves flakes and pallets. But you should get one of those floating feeding ring for flakes so they won't get flush down to the overflow. The fish will learn to eat flakes from the floating ring. And flakes will slowly sink down from the ring. I used Formula 1 & 2 and New Life Spectrum pallets, I soak them with my frozen food with a few drops of garlic extracts before feeding. But once they accept dry food (flakes or pallets), like SDguy said, they will get fatten up nicely.

Order some Ulva and Gracilaria from ipsf.com.

They call it Tang heaven Green and Tang Heaven Red. Tangs and Surgeons go crazy over it.

I'm trying to fatten up my achilles too but he only eats nori. He's not skinny at all, but definately not as fat as I'd like. Any ideas on ways to get him eating mysis and pellets?

Hey guys,

My Achilles is around 4 inches. Haven't fed any pellets etc yet, I usually offer pellets but have run out since Achilles has come around.

Might get some more again and see if this helps.

I tend to agree with the nori, fat belly but doesnt add any mass to the fish other than it's belly.
