The Flying fish

Oooh such beauty.

Oooh such beauty.

Another small showpiece that reveals itself on the life rock.
It makes me feel humble.:o

Perhaps some of you have noticed that my tank has'nt got light.

Uhmmm, sadly this is indeed the case.:sad1:
This is partly due to lack of funds.

But even if this was'nt the case, I really do believe that when cycling rock artificial illumination is not necessary. :clown:

Happily I don't stand alone.:p

In fact I am a zealous follower.

'The reef aquarium, science, art and technology by Delbeek & Sprung:
It is good practice to leave the lights off during the cycling process, since it is during this period that algae nutrients will be at their highest level, and high intensity lighting can stimulate exessive algae growth. In addition, the growth of nitrifying bacteria is inhibited by light.

And because I am planning to let my rock and its inhabitants to flourish in solitude for another 4 months I have time to observe what's new on the (LED) market.:jester:

So it's only natural light for the time being.

See the early morning sun waking my tank.:p

Ok, I am hooked. This thread (and you) are terrific. No, you do not need light to cycle a tank and you should not have a skimmer going.

Oh, I forgot. How did you get your chaeto to roll like that? Inquiring minds want to know.

I had to try to figure it out as well. Looks like she has plastic rod through it with a piece of tubing blowing water to spin it? That's the best I could tell. It's pretty neat, creative, and fun, plus something I haven't seen before.

This thread is great and very refreshing. OP, please keep it going! :bounce1:

Dear me, now I am blushing. :o
It's great that at least some folks out there are enjoying this thread.
So thank you both for your kind words.

Okay, about the cheato.
It is my first refugium ever, so I am lacking experience.
In this version a small refill pump causes circulation, just like Vorm described. Far to less circulation I am afraid, but I would be glad if someone would comment on that.:fun2::D

Oooh oooh I'm wondering again.
Back to the chaeto.
To my dismay it behaved like a traffic light.
The fresh green colour, that makes you want to add some oil and vinegar to take a little bite, turned red. :furious:
Over the weeks it became loaded with red hair alge, Yuck!
On the watersurface patches of bubbling red cyano appeared. Uuugh.
That was'nt my intention, all this nuisance rubbish.
All that I'd rather avoided had gardered snuggly in my refugium.:sad1:

To be honest, on the other hand it was bursting with life.
All kinds of pods, critter and what's-their-name-underwater-insects covered my refugium with beehive activity.

What to do?:sad2:

Last week my brand new skimmer put an end to all this indecisiveness!
It abruptly stopped emitting bubbles and that was that.
To make things worse (and now I'am deeply blushing) I only could'nt get it out, the sump is to high.

So to pass the time, I am now in the process of designing a new sump.

And my refugium is very, very empty.

By the way Steve, why is it better to cycle a tank without the skimmer?

Good for the circulation!

You are most welcome

All experts recommend rolling chaeto but your video is unique in that regard.

Well, better there than in your DT

Over the weeks it became loaded with red hair alge, Yuck! Probably cyano

Your Bubble King pump quit?

By the way Steve, why is it better to cycle a tank without the skimmer? Because it is removing stuff which would be used to establish your colonies of bacteria.

Houston, we have a situation!

Houston, we have a situation!

With the arrival of "˜the flying fish' "˜Max' (RSM 250) had to move.

Hmmmm, it takes more than a powerful mind to move a tank.

When a girl is'nt strong she must be smart!

So: Take a handful of cheerful men, :clown::clown::clown:

add some winks and a charming smile.

Ready for take off?

Yooohooo, "˜Max' is airborne, its inhabitants for once in their lives real "˜flying fish'.:p

'Hmmm, I'll never fly LFS (loyal flying service) again'.:mad2:

But, for future reference. Moving tanks with animals in them is not a good practice. Put the fish in buckets (here we use five gallons) with battery operated air pumps. Much better for the fish (and for the guys moving the tank).

In this country Beer works well for this situation. Adding pizza does not hurt either.

Haha, men are men, doesn't matter matter where they are....:jester:

In general you are correct of course Steve, thank you for your comment on this.

I gave the moving of the RSM quite some thought, taking all things into consideration:
- The tank only had to be moved about 12 yards.
- The men I hired (okay, I admit, my smile wasn't enough, I payed them:strooper:) are professionals, tanks, fish and corals are their everyday business.
- We figured that breaking down the tank, catching all its inhabitants, etc would take more time and generate more stress, than would be the case by bringing down the water level to 2 inches, moving the tank and filling it again.

So that is why I chose for the latter, the low tide variant.:p

The timing was of course very important, it took them 18 minutes to nearly empty the tank, move it and fill it completely, every piece of technique in it's place and working.:hb2:

And I am happy to say, that every sweet living thing survived the move! :fun4:

I have not read a more entertaining thread here at RC . Refreshing views from the Netherlands. Congrats on the successful move of 12 yards :).

Yeah, you are probably right.

I sincerely doubt that your smile was not enough

Congratulations on the successful move.

To put it squarely.

To put it squarely.

One of the most stunning aspects of this hobby is the thrilling feeling one gets when one discovers unique things that no one before seems to have noticed.

Wow, those square pupils!!!!

It makes me feel humble.

Or is this common knowledge????:lmao::lmao::lmao::lmao:

Wow! What camera is that?!! A Telephoto/Macro/Microscope???? Or is that just a gigantic shrimp :D?? Amazing!

Time for the tub.

Time for the tub.

Time for a bath.:celeb1:

Today it is the ninth week of cycling my tank, only 17 weeks to go.... Yawnnnn....

So once again I pamper those lovely stones, as on every fortnight.:fun4:

I blow their eager little faces with a gentle water stream,:o:p

Syphon all the rubbish they have emmitted.:twitch:

And treat them to buckets and buckets of natural sea water. :inlove:
