The Flying fish

The grass is always greener on the other side of the glass.

The grass is always greener on the other side of the glass.

The grass is always greener on the other side of the glass.

Allready 4 months have passed since I first introduced live rock in my tank.
Up till now it thas only been exposed to daylight and I must say they are developing to my liking.:bounce2:
Here in the Netherlands the majority of newly set-up tanks get a boost of light right from the start. This results in green medows and much worries.
A mowing team is introduced and before you know it they have to move again because they get hungry and werent intended in the first place.
Hmmm, not my cup of tea.;)

So indeed, I am a slowcoach, but I firmly believe in the benefits of patience.
Knowing that (micro-macro) live keeps developing on the rock, (so after six months my synchiropus splendidus will not starve when being introduced), keeps me motivated.:p
But than, who would sow grass, water it and at the first tender hint of green set loose the cows? Anyone?
Like cutting the grass from under your own feet.:wildone:

Princess in the pea

Princess in the pea

Princess on the pea
Oh sleep, oh sleep where are you?
I twist and toss on my waterbed.
I lie on my tummy, on my right, on my left,
I search and search, but am still of sleep bereft.
Could it be, so I wonder,
that there is a pea down under? :)

Why, thank you very much Jvak for your endearing comment. :p

Great Pictures and a joy to read
Thank you

Last day in the dark for tomorrow my favorite :fish2:fish-guys :fish2:will bring the new sump and the LED-lights.:celeb2:

Hmmmmmm, finally the fun will begin.:beachbum:

LED the sun shine, LED the sun shine!

LED the sun shine, LED the sun shine!

LED the sun shine, LED the sun shine!

As promissed, light would shine upon the Flying Fish!:lol2:

I have purchased the following:
3 x Aquabeam 1000 HD Ultra (tile) 3 x 30 Watt (place 1, 3 en 5).
2 x Aquabeam 500 XG Ultima (tile, wide beam, 5 blue, 5 white) 2 x 23 Watt (place 2 en 4).
4 x Aquabeam 600 ultra (tubes): 4 x 12 Watt. Two at the back and two in front. They shed blue light and are ment to simulate en nice dusk and dawn.

The temperature however forms a small issue.

Under the covers the temperature must'nt exceed 95 degrees or the lifespan of the LED will decrease considerably.
So I have been measuring all weekend.:worried2:
The room temperature was 68 degrees, the temperature between the lights 82 degrees. Hmmmm that's okay.:lmao:
But the temperature above the tiles rose to 118 degrees!:headwally:
Now I'm thinking about making holes in the cover, directly over the tiles.

To be continued.

Dressing up!

Today I'm in a merry mood.
So I looked in my wardrobe for some matching clothes.
I picked this lovely dress with the neat red strip.

Smart hey!:bounce2::bounce2::bounce2:

I need some help

I need some help

Dear readers,

I really do need some help.:)
On the surface of the rock I noticed a red small red patch, about half an inch big. Nothing to get excited about I thought, it reminded me of the mushroom like types as can be seen on the last photograph.
However the next time it looked it seemed to have moved.
Strange!
As I looked with more attention I saw it had many, many tiny feet.
And a very big central foot.

I'm very intrigued by this walking saucer and would love to give it a name so I can find more information about it.

Please, please help.:inlove::inlove::inlove:

Amazing find! It seems as though your rock is redefining the term 'live rock'! As if your algae spots have upped and grown legs! I'd love to find out the identity of this anonymous creature as well :)

Nice thread,
and I thought it was going to be about 'flying fish'!

When I lived it Texas, USA in the early 1990's, I would sail my catamaran sailboat often offshore in the Gulf of Mexico.
I would sail up on schools of all types of fish, and often schools of 'flying fish'!
When my stealthy catamaran sailboat would sail up on them, they would jet out of the water by the dozens, and 'fly' at least 30-50ft in the ground effect layer a few inches about the water.

This happened to me hundereds of times over the course of years.
Now that was cool to see!

Hence my screen name 'Todd_Sails'

Hi Annetje, I just want to compliment you with the amazing pictures of your 'empty' tank and also I am amazed with the patience your showing. Most people would have filled the tank with fishes and corals by now. I'm a great fan of having patience before stocking the tank.

Keep up the good work.

Jochem

Hi Todd,
Hahaha, perhaps the name wasn't chosen well enough and it might be somewhat misleading. But without it I wouldn't have heard your story about these flying creatures. How thrilling!
In Dutch the name of this thread is: 'In den Vlieghenden Visch', In the flying fish, something like the name of an old inn. You can compare it with: In the wild boar.

Hi Jochem,
Nice to hear from you.
Thank you for your compliments.
This is my second tank, and on hindsight, with the first tank the unfolding of life rock was a beautiful experience. I took my time with the first tank (4 months) and never regretted a single moment. As I look at it now my new tank must last years, so I took some extra time to enjoy this first fase.:fish2:

A delicate balloon.

A delicate balloon.

Doris (Dendrodoris nigra) gives a little show.
Not only does she diplay her beauty, she also gives away another secret.
She can be a slowcoach but when in the mood she has faster means of transport.

She takes an upwrite position, rumples her skirts in the current.
Letting go she surrenders to the will of the water.
Thus she floats like a delicate balloon, black and subtle red.
But oh wonder, the moment she touches ground she has grip,
sure footed she continues her journey.
