The ghetto 5000 50 gallon build

The cyborg reefer
Well, I couldn't find anyone to play along in a build off of ghetto tanks, but I have to many hair brained ideas to try and all the great ones in the ghetto rig thread to just let this sit.

So lets start the ghetto master 5000 reef tank build. Brought to you by the how not to build corporation...

So here's the goals/rules for this tank.

The purpose of this tank is to see exactly how inexpencively one can set up a reef tank and have something that doesn't cost to much to entertain me.

the MAX Budget is $200 including everything right down to build materials like silicone and glue. Everything else must be found, scavenged or built unless it comes out of the "budget"

Anything around my house specifically for a fish tank (which is about enough to open a fish store) is only "legal" if it is in a condition that most reefers would give it away or trash it. Otherwise I have to give it a "fair market" value. I may have to "charge" myself on some of the plumbing as well as I have buckets of it, and it is a cost of reefing set ups.

Maximum watts goal for this tank is 200W Once I get this thing running, I want to play with a 100% solor powered reef, and that would make it a lot easier...

Only livestock allowed out of my other tanks is stuff that I, would normally throw or give away. Things like Cheato is legal because I toss a bunch every month anyway. I think most people give it away if they know anyone that needs it. I'm also going to include Xinia, kenya trees and things like green and brown polyps as I think they are in the same catagory It might be a while till I'm sure everything is safe before I put a fish in there...

So lets start this out with a couple pics..

The tank... 36" tru vu 50 gallon tank w/ internal filter - found on the side of the road w/ a free sign. I've cleaned up the outside of the tank with a mr clean magic erasor and a palm sander... still working on the inside... Just gonna live with some of the scratches..

The "sump" not as "ghetto" as a plastic tub, but its a convienient size, and needs a mess of work. Also been unable to give it away and I'm tired of tripping over it. Not currently water tight either...

My intention is to build a skimmer that will also function as the return. Most likely a 5 gallon water bottle, and some PVC

I also want a fuge... possibly over or around the tank to use the same lights as the tank to save costs. I'm leaning toward and a fixture that swivels so I just move it over to the other side for day/night lighting. I may try and "automate" that if I can figure it out cheaply enough

Not sure entirely what I'm going to do for landscaping.. but I suspect most of it will come out of my yard. Sand will be regular sandbox sand, if I use it.

Any and all suggestions welcomed. Motivation encouraged so I don't get distracted on another project....

And current cost so far $1.50 for 1 of the 2 Mr clean magic erasors that I used to polish the outside of the tank...(All I had and ran out)

Coming soon... making the tank over the sump, making it so I can see in the tank, and maybe thinking about light and what to see in the tank.

Love it!! LOL!!

Cant wait Kevin.. take it easy this time, I cant handle another roller coaster!

I wish this happened to me

Scratched up acrylic tanks are dime a dozen of you live anywhere near a college. Its not to bad to polish them if you have a drill or palm sander.

At least I'm not starting this build a couple weeks before heart surgery this time..

Lets keep it this way also please. Tagging along to see what type khaos you create. This is gonna be really intersting to follow.

Lol..this is like the show junk raiders (or something along those lines) where they have a budget and free-cycle for materials to renovate rooms. Subscribed to this for sure...good luck!!

Well, Played around with it, and its trying to come along. I am reevaluating the use of a sump because of the cost of a return pump.

But its fairly cleaned up. Fun with mr clean magic erasors...

starting to look pretty good...

and better..

009.jpg

going to have to be enough... thats $3 of mr cleans down. and 1/2 a roll of TP

008.jpg

try water...

010.jpg

suppose I should have leak tested the hose..

not planning on using the light (too many watts for this project), but I intend to be the old chunk of cement pipe as the center piece... when its done. Have some plans for that. The white think about 1/3 of the way over from the left is a chunk of spider web on the pipe and not a mark on the glass...

012.jpg

decieded this would be to much skimmer, and I'm going internal... but it must be good for something.... I'm thinking surge tank for the main flow in the tank... or the fuge. or both.

013.jpg

Internal skimmer begins.. thinking a mix of power feed and air stone.. or just multiple air stones. I have old freshwater air pumps coming out of my ears. Need to find a cheap sourse for air stones.

should sneak right in here..

The ??? tank is drying. I'm not sure exactly sure what I'm building, but I'm sure its useful for something..

Playing around w/ the skimmer some more. Needs more power. Especially when sitting 2' from my 400W pig of a skimmer...

002-1.jpg

Does anyone know of a guideline chart or formula to figure out a general CFM target for building air stone skimmers?

GM V2.0... in testing now.

Surge tank.. still curing. Basic plan is to use some dinky little pump to pump up to the bottle, suspended over the tank. Plumbed inside the bottle is a bulkhead in the bottom which will have a U pipe of some design inside of it (the one from the earlier pic was spare parts and doesn't quite work for this) Once it hits a pre determined level, it should start a siphon and drain the tank back out. At least thats how it works in my head. In my head it should give pretty good flow for the tank as well. The large opening installed is so I can get my arm in there for plumbing. The top is used in the skimmer you might note...LOL

I'm looking at useing a couple of these, 1 as a fuge, and one as the surge. Have the water pumped in to one, then gravity drain in to the other...

LOL... broke the bank on it, but just ordered the parts for the lighting system $56 w/ shipping.... Ouch.. Should be here from China in a couple of weeks. Should have the tank cycling by then..

Officially not happy w/ the skimmer... Going back to a PVC idea, Ghetto and cool w/ used bottles... but a PITA to work with. Empty 5 gallon water bottles are free as well...

Pretty cool.

I would have played with your ghetto tank build but I already just started mine that you commented on a while back.

On mine I have spent a total of under $10 but I too will shoot my budget when I order my lights (whatever those maybe).

Even my stand will be under $5.

I will admit that the tank and supplies were already on hand so I may need a ruling on that.

Keep going and NO more heart issues.

LOL... I'm gonna try. I've had enough of people ripping my chest open.

In retrospect I think I may have set the bar a little low at $200, made things a little too easy with building the lights and I have way to much stuff kicking around here.

Least your keeping yourself occupied and doing some type of physical work. Thats gotta be helpful for you,Although the glue smell might not be lol. If i had an old tank laying around I'd join you for a $200 build off.

Palm sander did a number on my chest, but it worked better than scrubbing. Might have to do a water change on my tank to get some free SW to start this thing off...

yeah I'd say the vibrations were pretty rough. How is your chest wounds healing and how close to 100% will it be from all the carving you have had done?

reading through this, maybe since this is a ghetto rig tank you could make this a "true ocean floor" tank! like a scene out of one of our poluted ocean floors! haha

no seriously, have that big cement pipe as a center piece like you said, but then have other "trash" pieces "littering" the bottom. things that of course wouldnt decompose, but that you would consider trash. this would also min. the cost of filling it up with LR.

maybe try and find recycled sand, which im sure you will, but get some really gritty looking stuff, stuff with a real ghetto feel to it!

ehh, just throwing ideas for you to bounce around

LOL... it can't heal up as theres nothing left to heal. I don't have a sternum anymore, just wires and a plate. Already popped one wire, but I won't let them go in there to fix it.. not that I have insurance anyway.

You should get a headlight refurbishing kit from 3m....they restore hazed out plastic lenses on headlights to like new. The kit is only like $60.
