I think you are talking about Blue/Black Ribbon Eel.

Has anyone ever had any experience with these? Are they aggressive? Are they shy? That 1' 8" max size is very, very appealing...

I own one... He is not agrresive, but he will eat any small, slow moving fish such as watchman goby or cardinals. So if you decide to get one keep in mind that you will not be able to keep some smaller fishes.

Is he shy? I don't know.... From what I read Eels can't see a thing and they use their smell to hunt. Most eels usually hide a lot. This one is no different... He is more active when he is hungry. PM me if you want more info, I'll be glad to help you out.

Here is a couple of my videos:

Hey do you guys think a ghost eel can eat McCoskers Flashers Wrasses?

But back on subject LiveAquaria says its easy so it is probably and easy eel to care for.

It is only 24g tank...

I got rid of the puffer because he was killing my snails. I've had him few months and didn't see him bother any corals.

Any eel is a jumper so a cover top is a must! I learned the hard way when my blue ribbon eel that I had for 9 months jumped when I was moving.

Mandarin will be an expensive dinner for him. Any small moving bottom dweller will be gone sooner or later.

Here is what you need to decide: what is more important for you small fish or eel?

Good luck!

Well im upgrading my tank to a 75, and im already in the curing process. The chromis im sure will be fine, as they are finicky and tend not to hide. Firefish are going away as is the goby. Im most likely getting a smaller BT trigger so inverts are already at risk and im not keeping anything less than hermits or snails. My mandarin is my favorite fish and would hate to lose him.

Ghost eels arrive pretty big already, im beginning to think a baby SFE would be better, so i can keep him well fed on small stuff so he doesn't get the idea that fish are food.....

Do you think a ghost eel would eat an occelaris clown as I have a pair in my 180? In your experience would you say they are pretty hardy?

They arent aggresive as long as you keep them feed. I had one for over a year with no problems. It used to hang out in the same hole with my Gold Sleeper goby. in the wild they usually eat Dartfish, so Firefish and stuff like that will likely become a meal! mine used to eat silversides every 2-3 days. they are great and much more interstesing then a snowflake IMO!

Would you say that the Ghost Eel would be a good tank mate in a 24 gallon with like a flame angel?

And how did you keep you blue ribbon eel alive? They have one of the worst survival rates.

Yes it would work! These guys are not very active, but when come out they look so cool!

Blue Ribbon was a challenge. It took me good few days, few hours a day to get him to eat. I started with gold fish, and ghost shrimp. Once I got him to eat gold fish I switched over to frozen silversides. I was so mad after he jumped on me! Then again I would not reccomend it because they lose their brilliant blue and yellow color after few months(mine did).

They are weird sometimes... My Blue Ribbon Eel used to hang out with my blue spotted jawfish. What happened to your eel?

I got two clowns with mine in much smaller tank so the answer is hell yeah! :) Hardy as rock :) ...mine is.

Snowflake eel is not a good idea at all. He gets pretty large(fat) compering to a ghost eel. He will go after your mandarin in no time! I just came back from my lfs and saw them putting in a large angel to the tank with a medium snowflake eel. The eel went after the angel, but then he realized that he can' swallow him. I would never add a snowflake to a reef with many small fishes.

Thanks man, Glad to hear the eel would work for me. Do you think that it gets to long for a 24 gallon aquapod cause LiveAquaria say it gets 20in long and the 24 AP is 18-19in long.

If I desided to go with the eel its only tank mate woud be a flame angel and possibly a clownfish or fourline wrasse. Or option 2 which is a clownfish, flame angel, fourline wrasse, and a midas blenny.

ok i work at a lfs and we have a black and a blue ribbon and they both are eating.....should i give it a try in my 90?

No problem. He will be fine in there... Just be careful with overstocking. I wouldn't get more than 3 fishes + eel if I were you. I had more fish at one point and my nitrate were high + I have a small refugium, and a small frag tank connected, so my water volume is about 35g. Good luck!
