The Great (or not so great) Hillbilly Reef Experiment

I feel like my tank would work as a top off for some of the grand systems here.

I remember seeing your 29g build. You had a neat picture of a watchman goby hanging half way out of the rock. Do you have a build thread going for your 180 yet?

Build thread for the controller and light yes, lol. Not much other progress on the tank though just got married etc etc. Distracting myself with the controller till I can go whole hog on the big tank

I'll make sure to be watching when you start rolling. What are your tank dimensions?

Not much accomplished today other than the tank going up. Hopefully I'll have the plumbing done by this weekend.

I hope so. I feel like I'm being different just posting about a 187g dt in this land of beautiful giants. As it is, I keep looking for ways to expand, at least within the filtration department. I looked at a 180g plastic trough at the co-op today. Made me go, "hmmm.....how could I make use of this".

Ive seen lots of people using troughs as sumps. One buddy has a 200g trough filled with LR for his fuge.

Great start to a good looking build so far. I can't wait to see what you do with it. Don't forget to enjoy the ride as this is a hobby and meant to be fun.

Reef fast, you crash. Reef slow, you pass.

Still thinking about it but the space for the sump was constructed with the 110g in mind. I'll probably decide on which way to go by the end of the week.

Oh, I'm having fun. I'm almost giddy at this point since some progress is being made. But, I'm still approaching it like a medication titration.......starting low and going slow.

Looks good so far. I'll follow along...

Just as note, from someone who also has limited height from the ceiling...certain things are going to be troublesome (like getting your arm all the way to the bottom of the tank). You'll want to design some lighting that will move completely out of the way so you can get more on top of that thing. And try and keep obstructions around the perimeter to a minimum so you can move a step stool around it with ease.

Just trying to help you with things that I messed up on my go around :)

Easy access is certainly important. The fuge will be the toughest of all with that high of placement, but I can get my arm in there while standing on the step stool. I don't plan on messing with it much except to clean off the bulkhead strainers. We left extra space up top above the dt on the front for access (we'll see later this week or early next week what the cabinet maker puts up) so I could clean from the front and feed from there as well if needed. The space behind the tank is big enough for me to get up there and I also have access from the right side with the step stool. I'm a big fella so I might be making good use of my daughter, especially when I need to do something from the left side, which is a little more cramped. Everything else under the hood will be easy access. But, I'll definitely want to do things right the first time where inside the tank is concerned. By the way, my lighting thus far is two Kessil 360w on gooseneck clamps. They should be easy to move when needed.

Great looking build!
The best thing is how much room there is to the right of the tank for when you upgrade!
Sorry, I am 75% done with my big build so all I see are ways to go bigger!

So, the two 65 gallon water tanks finally made it. The original plan was placing one on top and gravity feeding to the bottom tank. However, I was looking at how difficult it would be to add the salt to the bottom tank. There just wasn't enough room. So, I think I'll keep the mixing tank there off to the left. Hmm, I guess that leaves that shelf for a future expansion. I'm thinking custom frag tank if I ever get that good.

sweet build and grats on conquering a fish room!, question, where are those water tanks from? trying to figure out why they look smaller than my 55's and if they are smaller i will be ordering a pair.

I got them from the local co-op who special ordered them for me. There isn't any indication on the tanks themselves who makes them. If you want, I can call them and find out where they got them. I can tell you that they are 23 inches in diameter, 43 inches tall with an 8 inch opening up top and a 1 1/4 inch outlet. There is also an opening within the 8 inch lid for running pipe into the container.
