i have a question for those got a skimmer after being skimerless for a while. did you loose the sponges, pods and etc ("life") that being skimerless gave you when u threw a skimer on?
no, still have many, if not more pods, and I have seen a continual change in type and color of sponges in my tank, but i still have lots of them, and would say I have more diversity than ever. I just overfeed.

I have more sponge activity in 2 of my tanks that have skimmers then compared to the 2 that don't.

Surprisingly I have 6 or so different kinds in my 180Bb low nutrient tank and I have 2 large skimmers .

the only thing that led to the disappearence of feather dusters was my copperbanded butterfly.

90 ive got a whiteface tang, two clownfish, two chromis, two ywgobies, one coral beauty angel, lmb,
180 ive got four large 4"+, a hippo, blonde naso, yellow tangs, rabbitfish, four bartletts, niger trigger, six line wrasse.

The better sponge growth can be explained easy.

Sponges do not do good if they ingest phytoplankton, Julian Sprung did some research on this... I will have to find where I remember reading it, its in a magazine I THINK...
He say a reduced growth rate in sponges when fed phytoplankton and disolved nutritents... he suspected or ... found or something .. that sponges feed of chemicals released by corals...

its really interesting, Ill have to find that article one day!

BTW: I have just started my protein skimmer back on my 75gallon due to the algae growth and dino's...
I did a 28gallon WC on it yesterday and started the skimmer back so Im hopeing this will help alotttt
I have noticed the DINOs didnt seem to grow back just as fast as before...

I am going to hopefull do a 40-45 gallon water change again soon, just need some money, and then some salt lol...

but I will keep you guys up on my euphyllias health while useing the skimmer...

My Goniopora Stokesii (neon green) look EXTREMELY happy today strangely enough... probably due to the waterchange...

A bump and MORE

A bump and MORE

hey just bumping.

But also:

LETS MAKE ONE THING CLEAR FOR EVERYONE READING IT (wink wink)

WHILE... Yes Im yelling and I know it... WHILE SOME PEOPLE ARE ABLE TO GET AWAY WITH RUNNING A SMALL POLYP STONEY CORAL TANK WITHOUT A SKIMMER, THAT DOESNT MEAN WE ALL CAN, AND TO THOSE WHO THINK WE CAN, YOU WILL WILL WILL END UP WASTEING MORE MONEY ON SALT TO DO THOSE WATER CHANGES THAN YOU WOULD IF YOU WHERE JUST TO GO AHEAD AND BUY A DECENT SKIMMER.

If you agree, please chime in.
If you disagree, well, since this IS a public forum, I suppose you can too... :strooper:

:rolleye1:

I am bumping... again, I guess everyone is all skimmered out... lol

But also, I am still running my ASMG2 and no bad effects on my Euphyllias again so far.

My newest acro from indo is starting to color up better, its got GRRRREAT PE and Neon Green polyps and is now developing nice purple tips!

Looks like a Bansai?
hum... any clues? Its not valida, the branches are much to thick and dont resemble those of valida.

I am skimmerless now once again and in my 300 the few corals that are in it have great PE now. My 180 that is connected to the same sump as the 300 has not to many changes, it is getting some nice feather dusters and a few of the acropora corals are changing colors but nothing back just going to purple or green. My clams, fish and other corals seem uneffected

Jeremy Blaze:
Thank you for your incite. I am running a skimmer, and very happy with it. But I love it when some one shares info!
THANK YOU

Any updates from anyone else?

I have been running my ASMG2 for some time now and I have had more problems with my euphyllias...

my hammer has completly died. by torch is still not looking like it has before.. and now my frogspawn went through a &*$$@ phase...

I have noticed that my Rainbow montipora is bleaching, and my huge purple polyp neon green base danae is starting to bleach!

Im very unhappy about this and im about to pull the plug for good on this skimmer!!!

I looked at photos of my tank MONTHS AND MONTHS back and it looks 10 times better then than it does now! and I didnt run a skimmer back then! only a fuge.

I have never run a skimmer.....

I have never run a skimmer.....

I have had many tanks, and worked of large ones at my schools bio dept. we have never used a skimmer...
Ok once i bought one, a cheap skilter filter, just to try out on one of my own small tanks. Now i have run 3 10gl, 1 - 30gl and a 55gl all without the aid of a skimmer. I ran the skilter fow a couple weeks as a test and yes some dirty looking crap was removed. I dont discount the skimmer as a good idea i was just taught reefkeeping without it. I was taught that a refugium is def a good thing and i have 2 of these. They help me alot, and i have alot of sessile inverts like fanworms and sponge and tunicates, in fact a very high desity of these and isopods and copepods. I think that running a skimmer may cuase the pop. to decrease and that may be one reason why im reluctant to use one. That being said i am looking for a skimmer for my 55 but i will only use it periodically. I dont want to suck out all the Purple up, Turbo and phyto and zoo plankton and other food i use. I am obsessed with all the mysterious wierd tiny critters in my ref. and tank. Im not sure they want the equivelant of a swirling vortex of death... Kidding. but i can see how it could adversly affect em. I would love to find a product similiar to activated carbon or a liquid additive which i could filter all this bad stuff like excess nitrates easier, so i could only change water once a month, but life isnt that easy and being the living god of about 6sq feet of living coral reef and inhabitants isnt either. For now any tank of mine smaller than 40gl will be without skimmer and if i decide i like the skimmer i end up getting maybe ill use them on my larger tanks.....
Mythbusters needs to get in on this one for us.
My word, they are usefull but can take some of the wrong stuff too, only run after a day or in case of turbo 5 days after supplements.

All my love to the reefers,
Ryan :bum:

Shawn since you added your filter have you tried increasing what you feed your tank? I posted earlier that I use to never run a skimmer but honestly now after doing much more reading and revisiting Eric Borneman's "Aquarium Corals" book I am convinced that we need to skim and honestly we need to skim a lot and feed often as well. Fish are not the only things that need to be fed. Corals of all types need food and lots of it. That means we need skim a lot, water change monthly, and use carbon as well. Check out this article if you haven't read it already about feeding our corals.

http://www.reefkeeping.com/issues/2002-07/eb/index.php

So I have been thinking that most people come no where close to skimming and providing enough filtration to allow for the feeding of corals. I think I am going to start a thread in the Advance Reefkeeping forum that allows everyone to discuss all of the new ideas that I am feeding my brain with. In the past I was one of those that believed using all of the gadgets and gizmos was not necessary, but once I actually started reading scientific material that explained how the symbiotic nature of reefs worked in the ocean it started to make more sense that some gizmos and gadgets are necessary but I still refuse to spend thousands of dollars on the hyped up name brands that are just basically taking advantage of use reef keepers.

So basically to make a long winded post point I am now going to be using a new Octopus NW-200 skimmer on my 75 gallon which you kick the tires and light the fires....:smokin:

I will let you know what happens. I have lots of SPS, and LPS so it will be interesting to see if they go through what yours are going through.

Thanks,
Bill:)

Have you tried a product called Algone? you can google it and check out the site .. if you cant order it tell your LFS about it and maybe they can get it in for you....

Shawn since you added your filter have you tried increasing what you feed your tank?

No... I havent... same old every other day feeding of fish, and I was told to stop feeding the corals phyto and oystereggs from DT's...

I do still have a dinoflag problem.. its not near as bad as it has been, its getting better... but still quite annoying!

Well I don't know if you're willing to try it but you might want to try feeding once a day and start using oyster eggs and maybe get some golden pearls form www.brineshrimpdirect.com and see what happens. I usually turn my skimmer off while I am feeding and then turn it back on about an hour later.

Also from reading that article Eric actually suggests that skimming might actually be a problem since newer skimmers are really efficient at removing excess waste. He also suggests that over a period of time with heavy feeding a tank should begin to actually manage the additional food source and begin to level off with excess nitrates and phosphates. Of course he is also advocating regular water changes.

I only read part 1 of 6 so I have some more reading to do, but from my research it seems to me that finding the proper balance is crucial to maintaining corals over a long course of time.

Hope some of this helps and doesn't detract from your initial subject.

Thanks,
Bill:)

Both times my skimmer has gone offline in 2 separate systems, my tank and corals start to look like crap. I was ok for a couple of months though. When I upgraded both skimmers, things looked better. One bb system and one DSB with a mature fuge. No skimmer? Not for me. I would have algaeville.

You (shawnts) think your skimmer caused corals to bleach or die??????? If you change your skimmer you are going to inevitably change nutrient levels, oxygen levels, quite possibly ph levels etc etc.....i can assure you that the actual having a skimmer did not cause your corals death or bleaching.......you should look to other aspects like nitrates, phosphates, ph, alk(especially alk) and you will likely see a swing....whatever you do keep it constantt pick one way and you wont see problems either way...no matter what you do you are fine...just dont change it often and think it was one particular method of husbandry that caused(rather switching between the two)
