The grouper you've all been waiting for (and more)

Added some Green Star polyps today...hopefully they will get out of control like my last ones did!

I have also finally found some photosynthetic gorgonians!!! I have been looking forever with no luck. I should be getting a bunch of frags this week.

Sorry about all the "reef" talk guys...I know this is the FOWLR forum but my tank is such a mix of reef and aggressive.

Are you going to keep them in brackish or marine? [/B][/QUOTE]
marine for sure, ive got a plan to find turtle grass and have misc, inverts within a thick bed of it so that if i am being lazy i can slack off and not worry about them, plus i had figure eight puffers for a while in a BW tank and it just seems to always stay dirty. i like the addition of a skimmer to keep things crystal clear.
BTW the turtle grass will hide the majority of my cleaner crew too, sorry for the thread highjack! :D

No its no highjack! I love GSP's and was wondering what you were planning. Sounds like it will be a beautiful tank.

Yes! Only a puffer owner would notice that :p

Good eye.

How big is your Golden? Thats my dream fish!

Honestly that grouper is one of the nicest I've seen in captivity. He looks soooo awesome prowling the tank in that one pic. That is a true coral trout!

I agree with Bill about the fins...some water changes and garlic enhanced food should do more than enough. They may have gotten torn too if he has been digging a lot of caves. That guy is just insane...we really need a feeding vid next :D

I agree about the fins. So far they don't seem to be getting any worse and I think he just needs some time to heal. I don't want to stress him out by taking him out of the tank. That could do more damage than good I think. He has become very comfortable.

Yes, a feeding video is soon to come! I am going to try to buy a tripod soon for my camera (which take decent vids) and then shoot a nice feeding video so you guys can see the chaos! I learned pretty fast that the grouper had to be full (or satisfied I should say) before any other fish get to eat :D Although the rabbitfish is getting really good at snagging pieces of food and then twisting and turning, spines up, to get away from the others. I can't believe the size of some of the chunks of prawn my rabbitfish eats :eek1: I assumed he would be way more interested in nori but he could care less. He loves prawn and even eats chunks of fish that I feed the grouper.

BTW, grouperhead, I wanted to ask you what kind of fish you would recommend I feed the grouper? I fed him snapper once and he loved it but I feel weird giving him snapper since I think snapper is in his family  I am not too sure what would be ideal for him. Living on the coast here, we have so many fish markets and I can get pretty much anything.

yes, very nice grouper, is he an active swimmer?
skimmate makes a good facial mask!

Yes he is always swimming. A very nice surprise! I thought he would lay around but only at night and even at night he swims around a lot.

Actually he is just as active as my rabbitfish and niger trigger who also keep swimming all day.

If you want some of that skimmate for a mask, I will send you some. You just have to post pics of it on your face :p

I think any fresh fish would be fine. It will take any white meat fish strips with great relish. When I had my blueline I used to buy whole smelt at the fish market and he loved them. Just feed a variety...he's not going to turn anything down :)

Grouperhead when you say a Coral Trout are you talking about Plectropomus leopardus? I am still wondering if I have a proper ID or not...Plectropomus leopardus gets way too big to keep in most home aquariums :(

I believe up to 4'...

My fear is that he could be this. His spots are not blue but he is a juvenile, so I don't know. So hard to ID these guys.

Justin, yours is V. albimarginata. The thin white edge of the caudal fin is a dead giveaway. They call so many different species of 'grouper' coral trout, I've gotten kinda used to it, lol.

Also he has yellow-ish pectoral fins and a white edge to his caudal fin. Im just REALLY hoping he is not the same as the above pictures for obvious reasons.

Oh man you had me worried...LOL.

More pictures of him to come soon!

T-T-Trigger I just realized that I just said 250 watts MH when you asked about lighting but not what bulb. I have had great success with the $18 ebay 14k bulbs :) Nice to be able to order 3 or 4 for the price you would pay for one brand name one. I switch them out every 4-5 months just because they are so cheap. I do find they change color temperature a little quicker than brand name bulbs but not too badly. I used one of them for about a year without changing it and never had algae problems or anything.

Justin, been away for a bit, but that tank is spectacular!!!!I like to see a predator/reef mix. I have a GSP forrest and some xenia. they both seem to love the nitrates from the bigger fish. Anyway, (sorry for the hijack) your hard work has paid off. That grouper is beautiful!!
