The "Hitchhiker's Guide" to the Maxi-Stream mod

The maxi jet pumps are nice for this mod, as they do allow some compatibility with electronic wavemakers, provided you dont mind the racket sometimes when they start up. But there are other pumps that can run on wavemakers just fine...Aquaclears and penguins for instance.

These pumps do have the advantage in that their impellers are fixed, as in, no need for a cross-brace on the prop shroud to hold the prop straight.

I bought some of the Nikko 3-blade props from Tower, and found that they work great on the very small pumps...Mini-Jets and in my case, the Aquaclear 1000 (since called the 10, and now the 101). Its a micro sized pump, something like 80gph, but it has a fixed ceramic shaft, and the impeller simply can be snapped off of the magnet w/o breaking anything like blades or the connection (so you can go back to its original config). With a 1/2" section of 1/4" flexible airline, the Nikko 3-blade prop can be attached to the end of the pump's shaft, and what do you know...its a micro sized stream pump that puts out what feels like 400gph. Great for smaller tanks, and for only 4.5 watts.

FWIW, if anyone can scrape up the older (now discontinued) hi-Spec powerhead models that hagen once had, they make easy stream retrofits. All I did for a shroud was to use a piece of pipe, drilled w/ 1/4" holes, and a zip-tie to secure it to the pump body. then I put a plastic pipe in part of the pipe to prevent the pump from spinning backwards, just like a MJ. It was dead simple, easier than a maxi, and not permanent. Oh, and dead silent.

If anyone can get their hands on the older Hi-Spec Aquaclears, they work like a charm. The 2000, 3000, and 4000 models are large enough to push larger props for sure.

Oh, and if you want a real monster, I hooked up dual 2.3" Octura props to the Aquaclear 5000 (now called the 901). That 59watt monster usually puts out 1000gph, but now...lol...its gotta be over 6000gph. I ran it sidexside with my cousin's Tunze 6200s, and the modded 901 simply blew it away.

Would it be OK to put one of these on a type of 'dimmer' switch, where the speed can be controlled if a mod we build turns out to throw too much flow?

I ordered parts for a MJ900 with the 1.75" dumas after reading this thread, and now I'm worried that will be too much for my 65 AGA.

jp

Also, for the 1.75" dumas I saw this:

-1.5" slip coupling for the larger 1.75" Dumas propeller

Do you mean slip bushing, to go from 2" PVC to 1.5" for connection to the MJ? Can you post a closeup of how you got the 2" PVC connected?

thanks!

I'd lay dollars to donuts that that thing is going to crucify your 65!

Glad it worked for you, I was just going to ask. A few days ago after I opened up one of my old Hegan 801s, I thought the fixed shaft would be easier to work with, but I did not need a pump this big, so ordered Hegan 30 (same as the old 301) and the Octura 1435s and 2035s, ready to do the DIY next week.

I think the 1.38" prop will work in a 1.5" ID pipe but too big for a 1.5" OD pipe. So I thought to try using an 1.5OD to 1.5ID drain adapter to run the prop and also to stop it from going backwards at the same time, will see if this plan works or not.

Ugh. I knew I should have ordered a variety of props since I was paying $8 for shipping anyway.

You'd have thought I would have learned by how many LED's and resistors I have left over from the moonlights I made . . .

dippin, just order direct from octura, i didnt mind paying the COD charge to expedite the order. sorry about not even seeing the ?. this thread progresses so quickly its hard to catch everything. also octura is very helpful and ship stuff out asap.

hmm.. ok.. but a few pages back, didnt D. say that you have to first get a catalog, then order from an order form, then send it back? just seems like a huge hassle, and would take a while. or can you just order over the phone? my tank has almost no flow in it right now, due to the fact that my MJ's are torn apart, and ready to go, except no propellars

anyone wanna let me paypal them to send me a few?

:D :D :D :D :D

.. oh btw, thanks for the response you two :)

I had to get an order form and catalog be3cause I had no idea what was available nor what I wanted.

If you do know the exact prop models you wanted, you can just as easily call them up and order it that way. they don't accept CC or paypal or anything modern like that but they will do COD or so I was told.

i'll get some pics up when im done.. im using some black sch40 (i think, dont want to go look at it atm :p ) pvc, that looks really good. and i'll also be using a good ol dremel for all the cuts and slats.

Ah, c'mon. This is the DIY forum. You know better than half the people reading this have spare Octura props or will within the month! I certainly plan on it in the near future.

What is the stock # ,for the 1.75" prop? I see one at tower Hobbies Stock # LXE 473, . Also which prop do I want .19 to .35 ?

snarkys, look closely at the picture below and you will see how I attached the 2" PVC.
maximod009.jpg

I first glue the test cap into a piece of 1 1/2 abs just as I would if I was going to use the 1 1/2 for the shroud. then I cut two small sections out and glue them in the inside of the 2" PVC. the after the crazy glue set I could attach them to the MJ just like a 1 1/2 piece of pipe

The Tower hobbies link doesn't work for me. Ted
Don't copy and paste the link. The forum code automatically abbreviates links so they can't be copied and pasted (the ellipsis is the clue that it has happened); you need to actually click the link which is this by the way...
http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXE473&P=ML
Non-abbreviated...
http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXE473

But yes, it is the Dumas Plastic Prop 3/16" .19-.35 Special Stock# LXE473. Much easier to just click the link though.
