The "Hitchhiker's Guide" to the Maxi-Stream mod

two propellers do theoretically makes more efficient flow BUT... At some point, as the propeller size is larger, the increased drag will counter that added effectiveness. I think it was Tim who found out that although the MJ1200 can spin dual 1.75" Dumas the flow just wasn't as good as the single 1.75" version.

To really utilize the dual 1.75" Dumas you would really need a larger pump to provide the needed RPM. But then if you're gonna use a larger pump, might was well use the larger Octura propellers instead :D

You do realize that shipping overseas will be very expensive right?

FWIW Octura Models will ship internationally if you order from them directly

Octura Models Inc
(847) 674-7351
7351 Hamlin Ave
Skokie, IL 60076
USA

Everything is done through either mail or phone though and they don't accept credit cards so you would have to send a check, money order, or traveller's check.

As for the rigid airline tubing, you don't necessarily need to use that specifically. You can use styrene or carbon fiber tubes that can be found in hobby shops. Some people even use a small pen's plastic tube for this. The SS rods can also be replaced with carbon fiber rods as well as I'm not sure that you would be able to find SS rods in different sizes anyhow.

Thank you for taking the time to answer my post dhnguyen;) , I am fully familiar with most of the info you & the others have been posting, like I say I have been following the threads avidly:D

& as Snarkys has mentioned international p&p costs are not so bad

It is mostly the props that are holding me back & the fact that everything is different here re parts size/name/raw materials, most of the small dedicated model shops have closed down & been replaced with joyous Toy'R'Us & the like :(

If one of you could suggest your ideas for the correct prop sizes I could try to contact Octura directly by phone (one expensive call coming up I think).

I will be modding the various Maxis (for the underflow & yes it's egg crate suspended over drilled stilts ) & Hagen's (old type 801's etc for internal flow Dumas 1.75???) & I think we may be bordering on new territory with the Eheim's, they are by far the most powerful & reliable pump I know of, some I know having given 15+years service, but I wonder where I would find a prop large enough to make it worth while though?

If someone were willing to do the stateside parts buying for me & send at my expense it would make it a lot easier on my part (pretty please? anyone?)

I have just been speaking with someone tonight who works in the Acrylics & C.N.C. field who said he would be willing to help me design & produce prototype guards & even stated that there was a possibility of him getting a new machine soon that would be capable of making props & shafts as an all in one piece (I have only just met the guy, but looks promising) & he is a keen reefkeeper that likes to DIY so he shoild be hooked.:D

I must say that I had been considering the larger bell type design for the guards to allow greater in flow, as I believe a lot of these mods are still missing that (mine for one!)

Any & all help much appreciated.

just becareful and not market, sell through this forum as Lutz493 was doing and got kicked off. His CNC'd kits where pretty cool, also came with a rotating mounting kit. I know he's still selling them and can be reached at Lutz493@zoominternet.net for those that don't want to spend the time building. I have to of his kits that I've been using on my 180g. I actually dremaled his shrouds a little to allow more water intake which at least double the flow.

Thank you for your concern humpn247, appreciated;)

But I am not looking to sell or market on the bb, I intend to DIY the best mods I can to run the new huge system (500+ imperial gallons), & I think I will need a few, might as well try different pumps/props while I'm at it as I have the pumps spare, I could run the new tank on the Eheim mods I did as they are powerful enough for sure, but still a bit to big for the main display tank IMO.

So if I can get a good few props & may be a few other bit's that I can't find over here I can be a happy Maxi moder too

The test caps for one is one thing I can NOT find anywhere here (they just don't make them here :( )

This chap I mentioned is just a fellow reefer on the BB I use in the UK, got talking as you do & turns out he works with CNC & enjoys DIY'ing reefy stuff, which led me to thinking if I could make the right mods myself first & then take the guards to him he could make a program to make them (which could be shared between reefers everywhere) then all we would have to do is take the program down to your local NCC workshop (Am I missing something??), not a commercial or profit thing, just a good idea that could save us all some time!.

Not everyone has a dremmel or better tools at hand like some here! (like myself till recently)

If everyone here pooled their resources (Idea wise that is) we could come up with an easier option for the less DIY oriented & tooleless among us.

Bear in mind this is supposed to be a save money idea & so far it's cost me

1. a chop saw $70 (no use as the blade chips the plastic & the fine tooth blade will be like $60)

2. a rotary tile saw $65 (yet to be used, we will see if it works soon enough:D )

3. hand held rotary tool & router & other bits $30

4. about 5 day's of fruitless running around trying to find suitable parts, not to mention all the petrol/phone call & BB reading time lol

You get the idea, I've had enough & need & little lift:bounce3:

Has anyone thought about using BASS REFLEX TUBE's?????????????????????????????????????????????????????, they caught my eye in a local shop (where I was looking for props) & they seem to be the ideal guard for the Maxie's & other pumps, if you could get them in exactly the right sizes (I bought 3 different ones more $$ to the ever growing expense list of the cheap Tunze lol), they were quite cheap like $3 to $5 & are slightly tapered (in the right direction) & have a lip I will see if I can find a link seen as I can't post pic's.

& BTW how would I go about converting Jpeg images in to a suitable media so I can post pic's (anyone?)

Must stop now or I'll be off the page:lol: you see I'm quite keen, just no raw materials:confused:

In anticipation

frunk I sent you a private message several days ago and told you I would be willing to get you any parts you need. All you have to do is send me the money tell me exactly what parts you want. Or hell you could just order them and pay for them and have them shipped to my house (I'll give you my address private) and send me money to ship them to you.

For something like a testcap I'd pick it up local but I'm not willing to run all over, you'll need to know exactly what you want and where you want to get it. I'm also not willing to "float" you with my money.

Anyway, I really need my mj's to get here!! I bet it won't be till at least monday :(

here is a good pick for mounting the maxi using some sieo parts and a magnet scraper,

Tim

Has anyone come up with a fully DIY way of mouniting the MJ mods?

I am using the same as above, but I don't have anymore seio swivels to mount my other MJ streams

Are the Octura props as quiet as the nitros? The buzzing from the 1.75 Dumas was too loud for me.

I was thinking of using the 1240 on an MJ1200.

My local hobby shop is adding some dumas and octura props to their regular order (no shipping cost to me) should be in early next week. Can't wait to join in and see what I can build (or break)

I think if you read back a page or so someone had used OR planned on using aquaclear (hagen) ph's

that is what I was thinking. I got two marineland 660 that I got in a trade for some other stuff. Will have to take a look and see how it can be done. Wont be able to put a big mod on it sense it is only like 170gph but will be a water mixing pumps anyway.
