The "Hitchhiker's Guide" to the Maxi-Stream mod

I've noticed that most people seem to be making the tube from the magnet fairly long, is there an advantage to this
versus making it short, more like the tunze ?

on mine I only have about 1/2" between the magnet and the prop, would I get more flow having the tube a little longer?

orlenz, i dont think there is any difference in making that tube really long or short. i kept mine quite short, the end of the prop os abuot 1 1/4" from the maxi jet body.

new issue i have now. streams & the closed loop make more flow that i can easily aim to avoid trashing corals, only problem is that i amnot readyto ditch the CL but dont wanna replumb the CL so the penductors are at the ends of the tank rather than were they are.

so what is a flow nut to do.

man, i really like these things.

I didn't notice any difference in flow whether the longer or shorter I made my shroud and rod. As long as you have sufficient inlet slots or holes for the propeller to spin, you would be fine.

Thanks for the input, I just did my first one last week with double 1 1/4" dumas props, I've got some octuras coming this week and will play around with them, Im running a closed loop also, guess Im a flow nut too, after seeing this mod and the inside of a tunze, I am a firm believer that they are way overpriced.

damn dh, my wife would kill me, i just set the 180 up not even two months ago. should have traveled a little farther and bought to 360 i was looking at.

well i might just turn the valves on the CL plumbing to blow under the rocks like 70% and the other 30% of the flow put through the penductors.

maybe then i could even get a few more MJ 1200 streams.

muhahahaha.

look out fishies

also a note about running two props, well two 1.75" vs. a single 1.75 prop, the two props produce more drag and cause the MJ to spin slower resulting in less flow.

i tested my two mj1200 side by side, one with the dual props ( brand new MJ) and one with a single prop ( about a month old) and the single prop one worked far better. could even tell that the prop on the single unit was spinning a little faster and smoother

a quick easy fix for that if that's the problem would be to wrap a bit teflon tape on the end of your CF rod? See if that'll help.

solved the issue . the noise the maxi stream makes is certainly not louder than the rest of the equipment and can not really be heard : )

thanks a ton for all of your help .

I don't know if anyone had tried to use a 90 degree elbow at the outlet so the powerhead can be in the upright position and still have flow go horizontally? Makes the unit less intrusive, and of course easy to attach to the tank.

Would it because the flow was reduced too much? The elbow can certainly be cut short to reduce the flow resistance.

Same reasons why the SEIO owners don't use the horizontal directional attachment. It cuts down on flow too much as well as the flow pattern.

I don't know if anybody has used one of these yet, but I found that the plastic 1 1/2" sink drain pipe works good, it is 1 1/2" ID and allready has the flange on one end, cost me $1.49.
it will only work with the smaller props up to 35 mm.
but it really makes it an easy mod.

I bought it at grove lumber, its with the sink drain stuff, the center piece I just cut out of acrylic and glued it in with weldon 16.

i think i saw orlenz' housing today at lowes but it was white. it was in a bag with other misc sink drain things. i did not have a way to mesure it so im not sure.

that is a great center brace

what is the best way to make the notch for the flange on a pvc pipe? without a lath.
